Are the conservatives falling into a trap?

Conservatives seem eager to rail against mandated health insurance, even though those who don't get insurance wind up passing on the costs to those insured. The current system, working that way, is not sustainable. So, if mandated coverage is ruled illegal, won't the natural way around that, in fixing our broken system, be federalizing the health care altogether, like in European countries and Canada?

Think about it, the government can levy taxes for government operations. So if they take over health care altogether, and "give" away health care to everyone while boosting taxes to cover it, then they've gotten it done without "forcing" anyone to buy insurance.

Maybe the conservatives should have been happy with the weak, tepid insurance company giveaway that passed instead of trying to kill it off. It would have staved off the inevitable move to socialized health care for at least a decade or two longer.

Update:

Obama-Hood - As I pointed out on your questions, "Obamacare" (there is no such thing) was NOT declared unconstitutional. One judge ruled one provision, mandated coverage, to be so, left the rest intact and ruled not to delay implementation of any of it beyond it's current planned dates.

Two judges at the same level of the federal court system have upheld the entirety of the reform legislation. Feel free to ignore the facts you don't like. You always do anyway.

The governments job is to defend us against foreign invasion. If they would do this, think how much smaller our health care problem would be without a bunch of illegal leeches, and ticks feeding off the system which those who actually belong here pay for.

By our US Constitution it is not the governments job to provide or mandate my health care, and I would prefer dying sick over having government health care.

In the new law those who previously could not afford healthcare will still get it at no cost when they show up at the ER.

If moving in the direction of European nations was a good idea, then explain why England and numerous member states in the EU have been forced to make drastic changes as a result of irresponsible spending on social programs.

    No, there is no "trap."

The problem is Democrats and the like want to "fix" healthcare in a specific way, and that way is essentially passing on all the costs to employers and eventually creating mass government-run healthcare.

But there's different ways. One option is deregulation. Another option is exploring ways to bring health care costs down through decreasing liability and lawsuits that make no sense.

No one has been saying our current system is good. No one has been saying we should keep it as it is. But lots of people say the Democrats are changing things in ways that will do more harm.

No. I was purchased health insurance even before the government told me I had to. And in fact, in order to become compliant my health insurance went up in price. But now I have the luxury of having my gynocologist visits covered, thanks Obama.

In case you hadn't noticed, European countries are collapsing economically at an alarming rate.

The government doesn't "give" us anything. They take away from one person to give it to another. That's called theft.

Socialized health care isn't inevitable. Not if there are still freedom loving Americans still able to speak.

that's exactly what cons thought in the early 90s fighting Clinton...

the current insurance system is unsustainable... it's own greed is destroying the system...

currently, Republicans see to be very gung-ho about cutting billions of dollars from every kind of health care assistance imaginable...

if they succeed, there will be a large and motivated lower half of the population that rarely votes, that may show up in 2012...

Imagine! A law where no one is denied emergency treatment!!

    Oh SNAP!!!

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) is a U.S. Act of Congress signed into law by President Ronald Reagan passed in 1986 as part of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). It requires hospitals and ambulance services to provide care to anyone needing emergency healthcare treatment regardless of citizenship, legal status or ability to pay. There are no reimbursement provisions. As a result of the act, patients needing emergency treatment can be discharged only under their own informed consent or when their condition requires transfer to a hospital better equipped to administer the treatment.

"It requires hospitals and ambulance services to provide care to anyone needing emergency healthcare treatment regardless of citizenship, legal status or ability to pay. There are no reimbursement provisions."

    And liberals hate this.

I will agree with you that what we got with 0bamacare is not nearly as bad as a complete government takeover or the "public option"...however, I still think what we got with this plan will turn out to be much worse than the way things were before (and they were not that great before, either). Insurance reform and opening up competition over state lines would have been the best solution.

No we are not ! The government is not known for their ability to run social programs ! Heck they can't run the DMV well ! Look at the Irs , It has a high percentage of employees who owe taxes. I certainly don't trust them with health care !

No. The law is constructed to automatically "become" single-payer over a few years. We're working to stop it. The current system, wholly Democrat designed, is not sustainable. Literally EVERY systemic complaint you have ever cited or heard was an EXPECTED result of Democrat-demanded policy.

A non-retarded place to start would be "stop letting Democrats 'fix' it" which is of course why you demand to have Democrats fix it.

    Andrew,

The obamacare mandate was ruled unconstitutional.

Hopefully forcing me to pay for medicare / medicade will be ruled unconstitutional as well.
