Doves or pigeons, how to tell the difference?

I have birds that visit my backyard, but I don't know how to tell whether they are doves or pigeons. Physically speaking, how can I tell the difference?

Pigeon and Dove can be used interchangeably. They're actually the same bird- both from the columbidae genus. In general, dove is given to the smaller members of the family and pigeon to the larger ones.

technically doves and pigeons are the same thing. pigeons however are most likely to be seen wild in your yard. doves are a lot smaller and mostly kept by people. pigeons also have a homing instinct (will return home) that doves lack

Google images for both. Where I live, pigeons are usually fatter & look difference than doves.

Doves are white I think. Pidgeons are grey.
