Let's Take You Back? 16?

Well here we are on the avenue of time again. Are you ready? sit back and let the fun begin. Remember rate as you see fit.

1965:

We lose a great voice in Nat King Cole at Santa Monica, California. Malcolm X is shot dead at a rally of the Organisation of Afro-American Unity in Manhattan, New York. The Who's first single I Can't Explain, is released in the UK. 1,000 black schoolchildren are arrested for truancy and unlawful assembly in Alabama. This follows the arrest of Martin Luter Kiing Jr. Nicknamed the British Bob Dylan. Donovan is signed to Pye Records...and Britian bans cigarette advertising on television. Johnny Cash album Ring of Fire is certified gold by RIAA in the US. Brian Wilson performs live with the Beach Boys for the last time until the mid 70's. Birminghan's Spencer Davis Group, featuring 16 year old Steve Winwood, play their first headline gig at The Marquee Club, Soho London. Reg Dwight later known as Elton John quits school to work as a messenger for Mills Music, a music publisher, in London. It's announced that Eric 'Slowhand' Clapton is leaving the Yardbirds. Session guitarist Jimmy Page is approached as his replacement, but declines. He recommends Jeff Beck currently with the up and coming Tridents. 3,200 people begin a freedom march from Selma to Montgomery. Three days later 25,000 freedom marchers reach Montgomery. A shipment of raw LSD arrives at Owsley Stanley's Bear Research Group in Laffler Road, Los Angeles. Owsley is now ready to become the main supplier of hallucinogenics to the West Coast musical community. The drug would not become illegal for another year. Wembley's Empire Pool, London hosts the 1965 NME Poll Winners Concert, featuring, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Moody Blues, Kinks, Searchers, Dusty Springfield, Herman's Hermits, Georgie Fame, The Animals, Them, Wayne Fontana, Donovan, Freddie & The Dreamers, Cilla Black and Tom Jones, would I have liked to been there. On the first day of studio work on the album Otis Blue, Otis Redding records a stereo version of "I've Been Loving You Too Long" at Sax Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. The whole album will be completed in two days.Bob Dylan and Joan Baez are among those in a Vietnam peace march in London. Most of the UK musical aristocracy are notable by their absence. The Beatles new album Rubber Soul is released as they set off on what will turn out to be their final UK tour. The Rolling Stones begin two days of recording 'Get Off Of My Cloud" at RCA Studios, Los Angeles. It will become their second US Number One in a row, after Satisfaction.Consciously marketed by their manager Andrew Long Oldham as the antithesis of the clean-cut bright and bouncy Merseybeat pop of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones set out their stall as mad, band and dangerous to know. Pitching hard edge blues against the Beatles melodic power pop, the Rolling Stones will be the inspiration for every camp, preening, but determinedly heterosexual fromt man, every louche, aloof, artful cigarette sporting guitarist, in fact every hard-edged rock band to follow.

so now are you ready? for the trip down memory lane. Come young and old, and enjoy the trip. Can you rate the songs to your liking?

    Hey Dave!

    1) Mr. Tambourine Man

    2) In the Midnight Hour

    3) (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

    4) My Generation

    5) Ticket To Ride

    6) Sounds of Silence

    7) Like a Rolling Stone

    8) Yesterday

    9) Papa's Got a Brand New Bag

    10) Tracks of My Tears

I loved the music from the 60's!

  • I was surprised to see two Beatles ones there but it was a great list. The Sounds of Silence would be my favorite - Papa's Got a Brand New Bag also brings back fond memories. Yesterday was one of the first songs I learned on guitar and is still one of my all time favorite acoustic songs, Satisfaction and Ticket To Ride are good songs but both bands did much better ones. Yeah I know Satisfaction is considered the best Rock song of all time. I think the Stones best song was Gimme Shelter or Street Fighting Man. I know I won't have many that agree but what the hell. Dylan is the master and that song is a legend in itself. Love Hendrix's cover of it to. Not a bad song on the list my friend.

    Nice one.

Satisfaction is one of two songs to be a UK hit in 5 different years.

Like a Rolling Stone is written for Brian Jones the leader of the Rolling Stones.

In the Midnight Hour becomes a much covered 'classic' or 'standard'.

James Brown cocks a snoot at the recording companies & only releases live albums.

The Who become the voice of the Mods in the UK.

The Byrds become legends with the help of Gram Parsons.

Yesterday is Paul's song, John doesn't feature on it at all.

Simon & Carbuncle go on to become big news, drawing massive crowds.

Ticket to Ride is one of the songs that John is embarrassed about.

Smokey Robinson takes the Miracles to new heights.

This is off the cuff & on the run (from what's left of my memory), I never (I swear) checked any of these facts before answering. My comments reflect things that came to pass, not necessarily in 1965. If there are any errors please correct them.

Nobody ever beat Owlsley at making acid (IMO) ~ Ask the Grateful Dead, the Merry Pranksters or Timothy Leary.

    Peace.

Edit; South African group the A-Cads cover of 'Midnight Hour'

I especially like the rare version of I can't get no.Like a Rolling Stone introduced me to the talents of Robert Zimmerman.Wilson Pickett had me tapping my foot and TRYING to dance.I said more than once to friends Papa's Got a Brand New Bag.I don't think there is a better song describing my generation than The Who's My Generation and remains one of my favourite songs.Mr. Tambourine man snick up on me and put me in a meloncholy mood. It would always captivate me.What can you say about Yeaterday except that its a high level classic.I love Simon& Garfunkel's music yet there was something about Art Garfunkel that turned me off,a sense of aloofness. That being said they made beautiful music together. The Tracks of My Tears has been my #i soul song since I first heard it. It made me a soul man.

I was 12 when these came out and with others were instrumental in my musical education. Thanks for these posts. They have been some of the most interesting posts since I've been on Y/A.

"Brian Wilson performs live with the Beach Boys for the last time until the mid 70's"

Brian did perform live with the rest of the Beach Boys on and off after 1965. He however, did not tour with them.

*That's what i mean. Brian played with the group LIVE well past 1965. It was only at shows local to California. This was done because he didn't have to travel much.
