Anyone know anything about/or use Gimp for photo editing?

Hello :) So i am looking for a free downloadable alternative to photoshop.

I really don't know whether i am hard-core about photography editing and such so before i go out and buy a program for hundreds of dollars, i would like a good but free one to test my seriousness.

I have looked it up, and many places seem to like Gimp. Has anyone used this? Can anyone verify that i can download it risk free? (no virus?)

    I usually edit my photos in some online photo editing websites.

    I have used gimp for a long time now and I can guarantee you that it is completely free and safe to download and use if you download it from http://www.gimp.org/ it is a great photoshop alternative, although it lacks a lot of features that photoshop has, it is still a great program.
