Can you learn airbrushing skills with spray paint?
I've been wanting to learn how to airbrush but I'm a bit reluctant to invest in the equipment on a whim...
So I was thinking if you were able to develop your skills with spray paint could that possible translate into airbrushing skills?

I think that's a great way to get into airbrushing. Of course, airbrushing is much more refined & takes a lot of skill & nohow, but spray paint is actually a great media to work with. I agree with the other answerer, you can get the feel of movement & learn how to use stencils. There are actually a few artists who prefer using spray paint for their media of choice, & they can do some amazing things, look at these images: http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&expIds=17259,18...
Just make sure & use proper ventilation, I had gotten super sick using spray paints for artwork & didn't have the right ventilation or the right protective masks, etc. & I got so sick from the fumes, it lasted months! Its some pretty toxic stuff in them.

There are many airbrushing skills that you can learn with spray paint because you can do the same spray painting effects with an airbrush. You need to look into airbrushes that allow you to change colors quickly, like the harbor freight quick change airbrush, to be able to really transfer those spray paint art effects. There is actually a website entirely devoted to this. It's www.airbrushpaintingsecrets.com They specifically tell you how to use spray paint art effects with an airbrush. It's very cool.

The thing that comes to my mind is one of those old petal cars, but anything that is made of metal and of pretty good size will work for you. If you are wanting to learn paint and body work, learning how to use a can of spray paint properly would be a must. Many people have no idea what can and cannot be done with spray paint. For example, you cannot paint a large surgace and make it glossy. This is due to the fact tha your spray pattern is not wide enough, and the paint drys too fast. As for using bondo, well, it is important to read the directions and there are many dos and don'ts when it comes to bondo. Repairing dings and dents these days is kinda on its way out. Replacing is the common thing today. I have tinkered with body work from time to time and actually took some classes. I have found however that experience is the best teacher in a lot of cases. We all learn from our mistakes. Too, it is a great feeling to have some success with projects and know that you did it, and that you did it right.....Good luck to you

I would assume it would warm you up with the proper movement of hand with putting the paint too thick so it drips. Also you can get used to working with stencils.
