1st time using Craigs List - suspicious reply or am I being paranoid?

Put an item out on CL for sale - received reply from someone who was out of town, but would send a check to me immediately saying they would be in town next month to pick up merchandise. My first thought was OK - have time to make sure the check clears - My second thought "what would prevent this person from showing up the next day claiming he got to town earlier than expected". Also wondered why he would trust me??? I guess I've always held on to the belief - never accept a check under any circumstances. How should I reply???

FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, i got something very similar on craiglist. Guy was going out of town but was going to send HIS SECRETARY to pay me in a week. Can i send him my email, name, phone number and address? THEY will sell your info to other junk mailers. Its a con.

I would never accept a Check from Anyone from Craigslist, most scams want to send you a Check or Cashiers Check through mail, then have a Shipping Co. come pick up your item, If this person will be in town, tell them to bring Cash, or no deal.

If they are going to pick it up themselves, ask them for a deposit (or check), and say you will hold it until they show up to pay cash, and you will give the check back...

Never, never assume the check will clear in time - it can take weeks.

CL is famous for the "out of town" buyers with fake checks, it is one of the most common scams. You can filter this stuff out by getting their phone number and do a reverse number lookup to confirm their address. Always deal in cash, and within your local town - meet a person in a public place like a library, never invite strangers to your home unless there are others there with you.

Well.. Money orders or cashiers work better.. Don't part with the stuff till the check clears.

The thing to be paranoid about is the perverts whom make contact through CL.

Once you get the check.. Just go straight to to bank on which it was written.

You are not paranoid, and your suspicions may be valid in this case. Cash only in this kind of situation.
