Appropriate to give professor a gift?
One of my professors has been really helpful in helping me get a scholarship and transfer schools.
Is it appropriate to leave a small gift and a card on her desk before I transfer schools? I was thinking something small, like some nice chocolate or tea leaves with a card. I probably will never see her again and she really went overboard helping me, so I would like to do -something- to thank her. Of course I will wait til my grades from that class have been submitted.
I'm an art student and she has been really helpful in helping me select portfolio pieces for a scholarship at the school I am transferring to.
I will be here for spring semester but not fall semester. However I will not have her as a teacher in the spring semester. I was planning to leave it on her desk when I get back from break.
@rarelily150- She has spent several hours in her personal time (outside of office hours) helping me, I just felt that a card at the very least was something I would like to do to thank her.

Oh yeah, totally appropriate to give a professor a thank you. Don't you remember the old apple on the desk routine? If she really went overboard and you have nothing to gain from the interaction (good to wait until grades are in), I'd frankly think it'd be more inappropriate to /not/ say thank you!

A question very much like this was asked recently, and several times lately.
If, you are not going to see her again (will you still be in the same school? You are leaving after Christmas?) AND the grades are not only submitted but you have received them, then you could leave some candy or tea for her with a card.
Otherwise, if you will not be in her class but still in the same school system, no; just a card. If the whole class gives a collective gift (meaning every person is included), then that is different and acceptable.

Does not a simple..."thank you for all of your help and I really enjoyed the class" not suffice

I see nothing wrong with it .
