Where can I find home decorating inspiration?

I'm a newlywed, in an apartment. We have basics now, hand-me-down furniture and photos up on the wall. I'd like to figure out NOW what style I want for the future, so that when we buy a house and start picking out furniture and paint colors, I will know what overall look I want. I don't want to get caught off guard and have to buy things that end up not matching my overall look.

SOO...my question is:

Where can I find (online, books or magazines) some good inspiration and advice for home decorating? I'm not really good, but I know what I like and don't usually. I'm not really interested in super professional, millionaire, unrealistic homes - so i'd love some advice at where to look!

It's fun to look and decide what you MIGHT want in the future. But my advice is to use what you have now and not spend a lot of money. I spent a lot of money on furniture and decorations for our small apartment and then we bought a house and I had to start all over because the things that looked nice in the apartment didn't look nice in the home. So, just keep that in mind while you look.

You could simply just type into your search engine new ideas for home improvement for someone on a budget and something is sure to come up. I do know that lighting is an important characteristic to any home. To give your house that classic look you should a crystal or brass chandelier. You are wise to start your quest now as it takes time to find your own personal style and what colors appeal to you.

Here's a book I liked if you want to add more color to your home. Color your life, by Elaine Ryan, which helps you match colors too. You can pick up used ones for a few bucks on Amazon.com

The cool thing is that you can take what you already have or thrift store finds and paint them to be your style. For example, If you get into fabric or Persian rugs, sometimes your inspiration can start there. Ten years ago, I picked up a couple Karastan rugs on clearance (in mid January) for a house I didn't have yet (like you :-) because something drew me to the patterns and I still have them today.

Also, If your library sells used magazines cheap, pick up as many home decorating ones as you can. Mine sells them for 25 cents!

I found that making my own drapes, duvets, pillows, etc. helps me to get in touch with my creative side and is a nice hobby. Visiting fabric stores as well as furniture stores may help you on your quest by showing you what styles your drawn to.

    Happy decorating!

Go to your public library. They have numerous home decorating magazines and you can take out as many as you like! I love this because they are FREE and you can choose from traditional, modern or country.
