What is a dual-head stethoscope?

What is a dual-head stethoscope?

Info on how this is different from other stethoscopes and how it compares to other stethoscopes would be nice. What are the alternatives to a dual-head stethoscope? How common are they?

I'm required to get one for nursing school, and like-a-dummy, I bid on a stethoscope before I realized I didn't know if it was a dual-head. It is the littmann cardiology III.

This is a question of pride of ownership rather than of tool for the job. A nurse needs a stethoscope to measure blood pressure and to listen to normal and slightly abnormal heart and breath sounds. Believe me (and I have listened to a lot of heart murmurs through cheapo stethoscopes) you really do not need a Littmann Cardiology III unless you plan to be a cardiologist. The idea of the dual head is that the membrane side is for high-frequency sounds (99.99% of the time) and the other side is for low-frequency sounds (from the heart, which you can largely forget about).

You might like to have a nice instrument to brag about, but I honestly suggest you buy a cheap (dual head) one first, and when you lose it, you buy another cheap one. When you qualify, you may feel like buying an expensive one to celebrate. Good luck with your course.
