I think your SOL on the UK, and Schengen visa. I hope you had the sense to make a copy of your passport. I just don't understand how people can lost such an important documents as their passport.

Go to the consulate of South africa in New York and ask the consulate what the procedures are to replace your passport, be sure to make copies of the Police report you will need some. You will need a new birth certificate for the passport, read procedures links on the page for all issues.

Please know one thing tough a UK visa is NOT a schengen visa but only for the UK, as the UK does not belong to the schengen zone.
