Apple Powerbook hard drive erase?

Hello

I am selling my old Apple powerbook and want to be sure that the years of data I have on it cannot be accessed or misused. Does someone know a good software program to completely wipe my hard drive? What else should i do? Do i need to do anything to the disc drive or RAM?

I was going to completely replace the hard drive but have neither the time or money. I'd really be thankful for anyones advice to make the laptop completely free to sell.

Thanks

You will have to boot to some system drive volume other than the one you want to erase, such as the OS X install DVD. Then open Disk Utility, select the HDD, select the "Erase" tab, and click the button "Security Options". Choose "7-pass erase" if you want to wait an hour or two. Choose 35-pass erase if you want to wait a day or two and you want to get the FBI off your trail.

Optical drives don't store data. The CD and DVD media discs store data. RAM doesn't store data.

You need to find the Disc Utility program and on the right pane click erase... done.
