Depends on where you go-- sharks are not a big issue in most areas, and attacks are rare. But the real danger is rough surf and undertows. On the Big Island, I have snorkeled in nice calm waters in some bays, there is a great sheltered snorkeling area in Kona that is amazing. But farther west I have snorkeled in a couple of bays where one time the snorkeling was great and the seas calm, we stayed for a couple of hours (and got burned). Last time we went the seas were rough, and it wasn't fun at all, and dangerous for poor swimmers due to the undertow. So really depends on when and where you go. Most snorkeling websites will tell you where the best spot to snorkel in an area is, and what the general conditions of the water is. But one day it can be smooth as glass and perfect, next day same spot can be rough, cloudy and difficult. Personally I prefer the Caribbean, snorkeling is better and the waters seem a bit calmer than Hawaii. Plus a lot closer to most of the US than Hawaii. Best snorkeling is in St Thomas and St Johns, Virgin Islands, and don't need a passport since it is part of the USA. But if you do have a passport, many other islands are great for snorkeling too, like Caymans for instance or the Bahamas.

    Not really.

There are a few fish which may pose a potential threat but most of them are harmless and, if you are going on a guided tour with a bunch of other people, the biggest threat will be the drunk people on the boat.

This sounds really weird but, if you get the chance, bring a can of cheeze whiz with you and spray it when you get about ten feet under water. Fish LOVE cheez whiz and they will swarm to it.

A great way to see some cool fish.

No, its not dangerous. You just have to be careful.Be sure to keep the air spout (thing) over the water. SCUBA diving is more dangerous. I did it when I was really little. (I was 5) It is really fun and if you can bring a under water camera.
