Dead is DEAD!
At least you will not feel regret at wasting the one life you had in the vain desire for another!

When you die you don't go anywhere, you stop.
Considering all thoughts, emotions, and memories reside in the brain, which stops functioning at death...
Remember what it was like a hundred years ago? It's exactly like that.
This scares some people so much they make up stories about a magical fairy granting people eternal life.
We call these stories "religion".
The bible agrees:
Joshua 23:14
This day I [Joshua] am going the way of all the earth.
Job 7:9
As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more.
Job 14:10. 12
But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? ... So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
Job 20:7
Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung.
Psalm 6:5
For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?
Psalm 31:17
Let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.
Psalm 88:5
The dead ... whom thou rememberest no more.
Psalm 115:17
The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.
Ecclesiastes 3:19
For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast.
Ecclesiastes 9:5
The dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward.
Ecclesiastes 9:10
For there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
Isaiah 26:14
They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased they shall not rise.
Isaiah 38:18
For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.

Oh , come on already, is it that difficult to understand? We believe that you just cease to exist. I know it's not as romantic as your idea, but it's what seems to happen.. If we find out something different it won't be because of some super being, it will be explained in scientific terms like everything else in the known world.

Where was your consciousness before you were born? There was no "you" before then so why should there be a "you" after you die.
Like it or not our bodies and brains are run by chemical reactions and electrical impulses, these cause emotions, feelings and our conscious state of mind. So when you stop these reactions your mind stops, you stop. They have made robots capable of having anger and fear and when you turn them off there emotions, there 'mind' stops. Just like we will.
We are effectively the most complex robots ever. Turn off the power and there's nothing there anymore.

I cease to exist, because "I" am merely the my neurology, when my brain ceases to function, I cease to exist.
Think about people who have experienced brain trauma, people with lost memories, emotional disorders, altered personalities, etc.. If your personality, memories, or emotions came from a "soul" then people like them wouldn't exist. And repairing or healing damaged brain tissue would bring back the parts that were lost, but that never happens.
We are complicated biological machines, and our brain is our hard drive, if you take apart a hard drive, smash the components, and then melt it into slag, the files don't "go" anywhere, they cease to exist.
When we die, we actually do die, completely and irrevocably.

You rot in the ground most of the time, some people burn up, freeze, get mummified, or get cut up and have their parts put to better use. Organ donation is a really good idea.

Nothing. Death scares people because they will cease to exist, so they would like to believe that there is something inside them that will pass or live on, but we rot in the earth. What lives on is the legacy you leave behind.

Death is the end for all of us, if that is more than you can handle then there are thousands of gods and dozens of religions to choose from, find one that comforts you.

You go to the same place as before you were born.

Putrification and decay.
Not that we`ll ever know about that though, seeing as we will be dead.
What happens when your cat dies?
Same thing.
Obviously.
