Neither survived.
There are many things that may have impacted the Mayans. There is indication that they may have over hunted and decimated forms of animal life necessary to feed the huge population of the Maya.
It is believed that coastal volcanic action may have caused the disappearance of the Olmec a smaller population than the Maya later attained.
