Average weight for a Chessie Puppy?

I have a male Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy who will be 5 months old on the 24th and was wondering if he was at normal weight.. he is 52 pounds. I can't find any comparison charts for his breed on line.

Update:

Here is a picture of him... im not sure I can feel his ribs.. but there is "blubber" on his back I can grab a nice handful.. but I don't know if he is supposed to have that because of the breed..

Update 2:

I can talk however I want about my dog.. my gosh it is not like my dog is going to have his feelings hurt. I call him fatty all the time.

Like the others said pit bull is not s breed. Most people are talking about the american pit bull terrier when they say pit bull. You said more along the size of a bull terrier but I don't think people really realize bull terriers get bigger than american pit bull terriers. Bull Terriers can get up to 80 pounds and APBTs are only suppose to get up to 65 pounds. I own both an APBT and a BT. My BT was 7 pounds at 8 weeks. If you have a REAL APBT then I assume it would be around the same or less. Remember all pups grow differently at different rates. There is no specific size for that age and pit bulls can ranger from 35-65 pounds or so. Good luck!

  • Probably... it is really hard to give an average weight for puppies, but at 5 mo. of age, most dogs are nearing their adult size, and will usually be about 4/5 to 7/8ths of their adult size.

52 sounds about right for a dog of his eventual size.

If you are worried about his weight, feel his ribs- if they are really, really obvious to the touch, and his spine seems to protrude, he is underweight. If you can feel the ribs easily but there is a tiny bit of fat between them and your fingers, his weight is good. If you really have to "dig" to feel his ribs, he needs a little less food. Remember it's better to be slightly overweight (slightly!) then to be underweight. Especially for growing puppies!

ETA: Try just posting the link to your photo, what you have there doesn't work... but anyway, loose skin on a puppy is pretty normal, and if you can grab it easily, it's probably not fatty... but you know the saying "puppy fat"? He should start to trim out himself within the next 5 months or so, but right now it sounds pretty normal.

Ask your breeder, but he sounds normal to me.

Please change the way you talk about your dog though. There is no blubber on his back. Dogs like retrievers have loose skin and that's what you are grabbing and it COULD hurt. You should be able to run your flat hands along his ribs and feel them.

Most 5-month-old puppies are approximately 75 % of their adult body weight. Most puppies will gain or grow each week until they attain their adult size which occurs between 9 and 16 months of age.
