Why do people look at you funny when you say hello or react in rude ways?

I'm a friendly person, and when I make eye contact with people, I always say hi and smile. Most people smile and say hi back, but some people look at me strange, or frown and act like I just called them a bad word or something! I've even had a few who said rude things! I always wonder why people do things like that, and I feel like if people were nicer to each other, things would be better in this world.

Update:

@Lieuden, Why does it make you feel like that, if you know they're probably just trying to be nice? This is exactly what I'm trying to find out.

Update 2:

I'm sorry, LiduenRose, I couldn't look at your name while I was typing the question.

Continue being yourself. Some people just aren't used to being wished so nicely. Perhaps, overtime, they might feel inspired by you. I have noticed many people at my workplace, when they see each other the first time on a given day, they don't wish each other..but just continue on with what they were doing or they will directly start their communication without a hello. Perhaps they think it's very formal. I think it's also somewhat part of the culture. Being nice and wishing is a very nice thing and you should continue doing that even if they respond weirdly. I am the same way :)

Lol, I'm that kind of person. I HATE being said hi to from a stranger. It just feels so awkward.

people these days are ignorant, usually when something like that happens -- the person is used to someone saying derogatory or slang. & i think it is stupid for someone to say rude things back to you just because you were being nice.

I agree with you and don't understand negative reactions either. I usually find I enjoy talking to strangers because it brightens my day and kind of restores my faith in humanity. Then I get to work and get grumpy all over again, haha.
