Did the South use the bible to support slavery during the American Civil War?

Did Hitler use the bible to support genocide during WW2? Did the Catholic Church use the bible to support torturing people and repressing science during the Dark Ages? Are Africans today using the bible to support killing children they believe are possessed by demons? And what about the Muslim menace and their barbaric “holy book”? Books that people believe are “holy” are the cause of far more harm for humanity than good, right?

The Civil War had nothing to do with slavery; Lincoln threw that in to gain support like Bush did with "terrorism" to invade Iraq.

    So many questions...

Yes the south used the bible to support slavery...after all its quite accepted in the bible...furthermore the bible claims that black people are cursed (see curse of Ham)

    Hitler I dont know

The dark ages were prior to a real catholic church, and much prior to science. Christianity kept civilization going during the dark ages.

    Dunno about africans

Having read both the christian and muslim bible, i must say the muslim version of god is much nicer and more pleasant

harm and good are too simple concepts to describe such a relationship. anyway noone ever does harm or good purely with a holy book in a vacuum, theres always more elements in play.

Poor logic. Sounds like you are confusing the excuse with the perpetrators. As another post pointed out, people from the same denomination in the North and the South sometimes used the same Bible verse in arguing both FOR and AGAINST slavery. So that makes obvious the fact that the evil was not in the book but in the person who decided to use it as an excuse to justify oppression. (What the Bible actually said didn't matter to them.)

Leaders have used symbols, art, and music to stir the emotions of their people in order to rally them for wars of oppression. Does that make all symbols, art, and music "far more harm for humanity than good"? Of course, not. Nobody can be that naive. (Or can they?)

[OK. I suppose they can be. After all, an hour on R&S is all one needs.]

People will a lot of times handpick and twist things in the Bible to support their own twisted views. It's so crucial to have knowledge of the Bible and study it and interpret it according to context and history and culture, etc of the time parts of it were written. I realize this the more we dig deep in Bible college.

As for, "homophobia"- There are clear implications in the Bible that homosexuality is Sin. People can handpick and all that but in the end the Bible will always be God's Truth. And there will always be those who will try to present God's truth in a misleading way to fit their own scary ideas and beliefs.

Yes. And the North used it to oppose slavery as well. Often, two congregations of the same denomination in the North and South used the same verses to claim both support and opposition.

It's actually both funny and sad.

And christians wonder why we snicker at their claimed "bible infallibility...?" :)

    Peace.

Desiree, it pisses me off to no end that YOU have the nerve call gay men "fudge packers" BUT---------

You bring up a valid point, and I'm glad you did. One thing many people need to realize, at least in THIS country, is that we do not all share the SAME God and some of us have no God at all, so they need to stop acting like they are monopoly on these things.

Yes, to all accounts. Seems like a good way to justify a person's evil deeds, after all what God did makes Hitler look like a Saint.

Hitler used the bible to get clues on where to find the ark of the covenant which he believed would give germany a huge amount of military power. Catholic Church is just messed up yo. Africans do that? Muslims are crazy. Back in old USA they did not call people salves. They called them servants.

I can only answer for Hitler. Ja, he did use the bibel and believed in it too. He writes a lot about it in Mein Kampf.

They used it as an excuse for their actions yes. They will probably deny it, but facts from written history can't be lied about.
