When will he stop itching?

My 1-yr-old has had an allergic reaction to something--we're not sure what but the doctor thinks it might have been the medicine he was taking for an ear infection. The reaction started on Sunday. His last dose of the possible culprit was Monday morning. We've been giving him Benadryl, as the doctor recommended. He is still itchy and blotchy. It's hard to tell if there's much improvement.

It is normal for it to take a couple days for the hives to go away, or should we be looking for another possible cause of this reaction?

if it was an allergic reaction to the antibiotic, then the doctor should have given you more than just benedryl to give him... found out my daughter was allergic to penicillin (amoxicillin) last year, took her into the dr when the hives were getting bad and they ordered not only some zyrtec as a antihistamine they also gave her an antihistamine shot ,and also a steroid prescription because allergic reactions to antibiotics can be pretty bad, since antibiotics can stay in your system for awhile depending on what it was, like I know zythromax you only take for 5 days but it stays in your system for 10 days, I would really have your dr check him out again and order something prescription strength for the hives if its from antibiotics

It could take a couple of days. Have you talked to the doctor about putting something on his skin like Cortisone Cream? It worked great for my son when he developed a rash & it stops the itching right away.
