Does it seem that Marquez is exempt from media criticism compared to some of the boxing elites and superstars?

Now my friends, I meant no disrespect to such a great fighter like Marquez. However, every great fighter has experienced substantial media criticism one way or another. Mayweather and Pacquaio hav both received heavy media criticism for some of their selection of fights or close victories that some people thought they should have not received. Other great fighters like Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr., and De la Hoya have also reached the same fate of multi-dimensional criticism. But to me Marquez seems to be an exception. Here is the list which did not garner any media criticism or attention about Marquez:

1. Barrera vs Marquez. Harold Lederman had the score in favor of Barrera. Barrera said GBP gave Marquez the favor because of their affiliation with the judges. Two judges scored it 115-112 while a shocking score by one judge had it 118-110. It sparked controversy in Mexico but barely got any attention in USA. Besides HBO, TV Azteca also had Barrera winning. Barrera landed 262 total punches to 250 for Marquez, and a higher connection percentage and power punches, and Barrera also had a knockdown.

2. Barrera was coming off a KO loss to Pacquaio, but Marquez immediately picked him as the next opponent. If this was Mayweather or Pacquaio or anyone doing the same thing, that would be considered cherry picking but not Marquez. Most people felt the days of Barrera being elite were over after his brutal trilogy with Morales and a lopsided KO loss to Pacquaio. Yet, most experts felt Barrera won against Marquez and Marquez receives little criticism for it.

3. Marquez rejected the $750,000 offer by Top Rank for Pacquaio rematch but went to Indonesia to fight Chris John for $30,000. Again, if this was another boxer, this would be considered ducking but not Marquez.

4. Amir Khan has offered Marquez for a fight but Marquez rejected claiming that GBP is using his name to elevate Khan’s status. Marquez had a shot to become the first Mexican fighter to win 4 titles in 4 weight division. Marquez instead chose a rematch against Juan Diaz who was coming off a loss to Paulie Malignaggi with by far less money and with no title on the line but his.

5. After Pacquaio KO’d Hatton, Marquez, Nacho, and Oscar De La Hoya eventually tried to reach Hatton for a bout. Now imagine if another great fighter did this, then that would be considered cherry picking.

Again, I do not hate on Marquez. I think he is a fantastic fighter and is one of the best Pound for Pound Fighters of my generation. Conversely, every great fighter has flaws and is subject to media criticism. But why does Marquez seem to be an exception? He is considered a warrior with a lot of heart, and his thrash talking or claims are accepted. But his flaws are barely scrutinized. Please let’s keep our debates healthy and professional. Thank you and God bless! :-)

Update:

@hairydude, thanks my friend! I hope everything is well with you! :-)

Update 2:

@ odlanyer, it's great to see you as well. Did you ever made it to Dallas for the Pac-Margarito fight? I didn't go, I watched it at a friend's house in Houston instead.

Update 3:

@ Normen Bates, excellent point bro and a thumbs up to you. I never said Marquez doesn't deserve a third fight with Manny, but at this point I feel like one has become bigger than the other. Marquez would be at a great disavantage if the fight takes place at 147. :-)

@ragdefender, thanks attorney :-) I do believe Marquez has a lot of self pride, he is a great fighter but his team has made very bad business decisions.

@who would win, I agree. Marquez seems to be an exception. Fighting Morales who is way pass his prime would be an easy possible KO victory for Marquez who is still an elite fighter.

@ Cathee, every elite boxer has their flaws and get criticized by the media. I just feel Marquez seems to be an exception. You made a valid point of Marquez calling out Hatton after the Pacquaio KO, yet he almost get little to no criticism for that.

Update 4:

@ Andrew M, haha everytime I say something that's controversial about Marquez you show up and that's been two straigh years since I've known you! Im kiding bro it's really great to seee you! You made some valid arguments and there is no way I can argue about what Santana D said. I've always enjoyed our little debates on this bro :-)

@ nepster, excellent point as always my friend. I believe as time pass, you will be the next Filipino on the top 10 in Y.A boxing. You explained yourself very well. Pac and Mayweather fans are hardcore fans and they will do anything to criticize each other, thus, putting Mayweather and Pacquaio in the microscope. Marquez doesn't have as many passionate fans as them two, plus these fans have a tremendous influence in the media.

@ The Great One, it is always awesome to see your intelligent response. I believe Marquez was truly disappointed that he came so close on beating Pacquaio with many people feeling he won either one or both fights. I cannot blame M

Update 5:

@ gaye pactard, lol. nice name man.

@ truth x, hey bro, how are you? been a long time and it's always a pleasure to see your intelligent answer. :-)

@ Killa, nice response, Marquez seems like he can choose any opponents whether if he is coming from a KO loss or someone who is considered washed up yet rarely gets any media scrutiny.

@ alex, hey bro good point, fanbases does matter as they have a huge political influences to the media. :-)

Update 6:

Update 7:

@fts 1939, Thanks, Im glad to be back and see your brilliant post. :-)

@ RICLOPEZ, hey bro how are you? I believe Marquez is also a courageous fighter but his controversial win over Barrera, his negotiations to fight Hatton after his KO loss, rejection of Khan to fight Diaz who was coming of a loss, and trying to make a fight with Erik Morales barely got any media criticism.

@ Seabiscuit, I agree.

@ Coolguy, Sergio Martinez and Marquez are now elites, but you are right even Martinez seem to be exempt perhaps because of his great performance over Paul Williams.

@ guitarrist, True, since Marquez name is not as famous, the criticism about him is less intensified as others with bigger names.

@ blogbaba, Marquez not being a box office superstar has tremendously influence less media criticism on him which is of his benefit.

@ Pretty Boy Floyd, we are all in agreement that Marquez is a true warrior, but the question is why isn't he getting as much criticism as superstar. Every superst

Update 8:

@odlanyer, Merry Christmas to you as well my friend. Hope to see you one of these days. I may try and watch the Donaire vs Montiel fight this February in Vegas. I have no gaurantees of course but if you do make it let me know :-)

Update 9:

@KID, thanks for your response :-)

Update 10:

@bballgirl, no I'm not Indian, sorry. I'm Filipino-American :-)

Awwww how I missed having to defend Marquez from you Jon...J/K

    1. How can there be any complains on the Barrera vs Marquez fight??? After Barrera's dirty dirty tactics it's almost impossible to argue something in favor of him. Both you and I know Barrera should have been DQ'd on the spot. I'm surprised you, a young fair man defends Barrera. The scorecards were ridiculous, I agree, but Marquez deserved the nod.

    2. Barrera had a 5 winning streak before losing to Marquez. After the Marquez fight, he fought Pacquiao for a second time.

    3. Santana D mentioned Pacquiao being too greedy and offering Marquez a pretty sh!tty deal. He said Beristain is a very difficult person to work with and it was his fault the rematch didn't happen. Santana's word to me is bible, so I don't have a reason not to believe him.

    4. I was actually pissed off that Marquez didn't take the Khan fight. At first he said he didn't want to be "used" to make Khan a superstar. Now he says he had a back injury...It just seems like he didn't want to fight Khan.

    5. Marquez is a featherweight dominating the lightweight division. A Hatton fight made great sense. Hatton was never a great fighter but definitely dangerous for a smaller greater man.

Marquez is not really a man that makes the news often, so my guess is that there's not much room for him to be criticized by the media. Pacquiao is ridiculously famous and all you hear from him are great things. If there's anybody that gets crap from the media is Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Hey JON you're back again man!

Marquez isn't a household name and I think the media are uninterested about Marquez. He kind of have a boring personality which actually has helped in a little bit because whatever Mayweather and Pacquaio gets from media of being called cherry pickers or duckers, then it is only right to call Marquez the same thing. In fact many boxers can be called the same thing. Marquez is known for almost beating Pacquaio by a close decision yet he is unknown for a controversial win over Barrera. Yes it is unfair, but Marquez isn't a huge household name so most of us don't really care much.

  • 1 decade ago

    Hey Jon,

Welcome back! Great question, and IMO, it's for two reasons. One, Marquez isn't a household name and because of that, the media doesn't waste it's bandwidth writing a lot of articles on Marquez and Marquez doesn't have the passionate fans enough to debate his greatness. They see that he fights with balls and guts, and for now, until you reach the top epsilon of the sport and popularity, it's enough. If you notice, really ONLY the top dogs of any sport gets put under the microscope and that makes them much more vulnerable to criticism. Secondly, Marquez doesn't have the media hype behind him so people don't see him as the 2nd Coming of Christ. Floyd's fans and Pac's fans are passionate. They're die hard nuthuggers think they're unstoppable and can never be beaten, so when one side believes that, the other side looks for aspects to criticize the heralded fighter. So, basically because he's not a big enough star, and because people don't believe they're the best thing since sliced bread is the reason why his accomplishments and fights have never been put under the microscope.

Being Mexican-American I believe that Juan Manuel Marquez is a very good boxer

he defeated the likes of Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Diaz (twice), Joel Casamayor,

Manuel Medina, Derrick Gainer and Rocky Juarez. And let's not forget he's been in

the ring with the best in the world Manny Pacman, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Chris John

and he defeated Michael Katsidis who defeated Kevin Mitchell who defeated Breidis

Prescott who defeated and knocked out Amir Khan in the first round a loss that still

does haunts him still today. I wouldn't necessarily call it "cherry picking" cause let's

not forget Juan Manuel Marquez can't fight any of Top Rank's boxers because they

are at a bitter contract dispute with Golden Boy Promotions so, there lots of boxing

matches that can be made which can not due to their rivalry and promotion issues.

I think right now Juan Manuel Marquez is just too focused on getting a third fight in

the ring with Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao which is fine, that's not going to happen in

the next year Manny Pacquiao has already agreed to terms to fight Shane Mosley

on May 7, 2011. So, you make a lot of good points to give constructive criticism to

Juan Manuel Marquez he should of elected to fight Manny Pacquiao in 2006 should

not have taken less money to fight Chris John that was a bad business decision in

the future he should give Amir Khan a chance for a mega Junior Welterweight fight.

Source(s): Glad your back John I was a top contributor myself in yahoo's boxing section.

Hell yeah JON is back! :D

Like most of what the people said, I just don't think JMM has the media charisma to be worth their time. All eyes and ears are on Manny and Floyd so these media men focus all their energy in them since they would generate the most revenue. Indeed my friend, all boxers have criticisms and Marquez is no exception. I truly believe after how he rejected Pacquiao for an immeidate rematch after the first fight he should no longer have any right to be asking for a rematch now. And even up to know he's still letting money issues prevent a clash with Pacquiao.

Juan Manuel Marquez faced Marco Antonio Barrera four years after Manny Pacquaio and Barrera was on a six fight winning streak, so this misconception that Marquez immediately took advantage of a fading/ shop-worn fighters is pushing it a little. The fight with Barrera is extremely important to his legacy because it was a huge fight in Mexico, maybe some what controversial, but I didn't score it I just watched it.

Rejecting an offer for a rematch in order to fight Chris John was probably one of the worst business decisions in the history of Boxing, almost as bad as Riddick Bowe not fighting Lennox Lewis. But in Juan Manuel Marquez's defense it was Nacho Beristain's idea as well and he they split the blame 50-50 on that situation, Marquez wasn't alone. AND DOSE ONE BAD DECISION END UP BEING THE REASON MARQUEZ IS FOREVER EXEMPT FROM GETTING A REMATCH WITH PACQAUIO.

Regardless of if he called out Ricky Hatton or not he didn't fight him so I can't blame him for anything because he didn't do anything.

One thing we learned about the Floyd Mayweather fight is that Juan Manuel Marquez doesn't handle moving up in weight as well as other fighters. Golden Boy just wanted to use Marquez for his name value only, Amir Khan had no business trying to fight Marquez. If Marquez struggled with Mayweathers size what is supposed to make me think he wouldn't have struggled with Khan's size who's actually bigger and more physical than Floyd.

Oscar Dela Hoya made a career out of being matched with naturally smaller opponents, so Golden Boy knows almost better than anybody in Boxing the art of luring a smaller fighter with a name up in weight so that a prospect can gain some creditability.

Marquez would have been a pawn used to enhance Amir Khan's public appeal and I'm glade he was smart enough to realize that Golden Boy was just using him.

  • Yes Marquez is a superstar and an elite fighter but why isn't he getting as much criticism as most elite boxers do?

Marquez challenges Hatton after Pacquaio KHTFO him, but media says nothing

Marquez says he doesn't want to fight Khan and choose Diaz after he lost to Malignaggi, again media says nothing

Marquez now is trying to land a fight with Erik Morales, but the media says nothing negative.

Damn man, if you ask me, it seems like either the media loves Marquez or they just don't care much about him.

Marquez doesn't get media headlines enough. He is a good boxer but he needs more headlines before being popular. I think Marquez has as much flaws as any fighter on the spot. Many great fighters have been guilty of cherry picking or ducking and Marquez is no exception.

Marquez just like other elite boxers have flaws. But media chooses the topic that creates the most buzz among fans. Marquez just doesn't have the charisma, the charm, or the style to generate a lot of media interest. Marquez should have not asked Hatton for a fight after Pacquaio KO and he should have probably accepted a fight with Amir Khan over Juan Diaz, but the media forgives him because most media people could careless. Marquez maybe should have lost to Barrera but the media doesn't discuss it either. Marquez is now fighting Erik Morales, that would also not get any heat from the media because again, Marquez does not have the appeal that creates media interest or that "buzz" that gives himself the media attention.

    Welcom back Jon!

It just goes to show that there are only 2 boxers right now called "elite". Marquez I think sometimes lets his pride get ahead of him. The very thing that makes him get up and fight after a knock down, is causing him to make some erratic decisions. Never mind for a while the wins that may have been losses. Those can't be his fault. But the choice of Chris John and his insistence on a higher pay in what could have been Pac-Marquez III is just his arrogance trying to prove that he is on equal terms with Pacquiao.
