4 week old with a cold?

My son will be 4 weeks old on Friday. He was fine a couple of days ago but now he has a runny nose and coughing more than usual. So I think he has a cold. I plan on calling the doctor in the morning but I wanted to get other mother's opinions. Is there anything I can do for my son? He is sleeping more than usual to. I don't know if he is only just starting to sleep through the night or if it's the cold. Any suggestions?

Update:

at night he has been sleeping up to 6 hours wakes up for a bottle and then sleeps for another 4. He has been doing this the last couple of days. I wasn't questioning his sleeping patterns just his runny nose, watery eyes, and coughing.

It's okay, little one will be fine! Thank goodness it's just a cold and not the flu! What you can do to help with the breathing, and my doctor gave me this advice, is use baby vicks, but don't apply it directly to the chest. put a thin cotton onesy on baby, put the vicks on the onesy's chest area, then put another shirt over that so it doesn't come in contact with baby's delicate skin. Use booger sucker as much as you need (that's what it's for), and use baby saline drops. Make sure to keep up on clearing out his little nose, so that the mucus doesn't make it to the lungs. (Not a big deal if it does make it to the lungs, it's just better to keep it away.) He is sleeping more because well, he's sick! Adults sleep more when they are sick too! You can give him baby Tylenol to help with any discomfort he may be having, do NOT give him baby Motrin because he is not old enough for it yet. He is only allowed Tylenol infant drops. Call your local E.R. to see how much he can have according to his weight. Lots of cuddles, and try to elevate his head to help with drainage of the mucus. Don't worry mama, many babies get colds this little. Especially since it's winter! Babies have stronger immune systems than we give them credit for! Just keep him away from other sick people because his immune system isn't AS strong at the moment, so it's easier for him to contract sicknesses and you don't want to pile another one on him. Check on him through the night and he will be just fine. Much love and get better soon little man!

lots of babies get colds, my friends 6 week old has one atm as well!

Theres not a lot you can do - just make sure he feeds, although it sounds like he's doing ok with that, and sleeping for 6 hours through the night is fine - he's waking up when hes hungry, and don't let him overheat.

Certainly call the dr if you're worried, but as long as his temperature doesn't go up to much (and you WILL know if it does, just by touching him) he should be fine.

well the infant vicks vapo rub is for 3 months and up, but you can put some on her feet and put socks on. forgot why its suppose to help, but it does, lol. just dont put it on her chest!

and the johnsons vapor bath is also for 3 plus months, so thats not an option.

other than that just use the saline and sucker from little noses, and a humidifier. there isnt much you can do for a baby that young
