He does. But strictly speaking he is not promoting the smoking of spliffs, he is correctly identifying a huge waste of time and money and the criminalization of otherwise untainted youth by making them serve time. Once jailed, they are corrupted and made worse than they ever would have been. He is right in his assessment of the situation.

Marijuana is mild compared with other illegal drugs, and you can only become addicted if you smoke a large amount of it over a sustained period. It can be harmful, and you shouldn't drive after using it, but that is also true of alcohol. (Unlike alcohol, people rarely get stoned to fight.) Dope also has possible medical benefits but a serious study of that is impossible while it is still illegal. I am in favour of legalizing it, as I believe the introduction of a new cash crop will help out our farming economy, taxation and regulation will limit the hold of gangsters in the industry, and conutries that do legalize it will receive additional income from tourists. As for Pat Robertson? He's a scumbag and a fraudster and is out for just one man, that man being Pat Robertson.

My reading of the situation is that he wants to restore justice in sentencing. Quoting:

"We're locking up people that take a couple of puffs of marijuana and the next thing you know they've got 10 years -- they've got mandatory sentences and these judges, they throw up their hand and say "What can we do? It's mandatory sentences." We've got to take a look at what we're considering crimes, and that's one of 'em. I mean, I'm not exactly for the use of drugs, don't get me wrong. But I just believe criminalizing marijuana, criminalizing the possession of just a few ounces of pot, and that kind of thing, I mean it's costing us a fortune, and it's ruining young people. The young people go into prisons, they go in as youths, and they come out as hardened criminals, and it's not a good thing.

I read this is advocating a punishment that fits the crime of possessing a moderately dangerous drug as opposed a punishment that fits armed robbery.

    Cheers,

    Bruce

It sounds like he is more concerned about people going to prison than he is about smoking weed. I am not so sure that he is a proponent of legalization.

I don't have any problems with that....it's just an herb. Making it legal doesn't mean all will use it any more than keeping it illegal means people will stop using it.
