What is up with my Pokemon Platinum?

I just got a dsixl(had the original ds) I had a game file saved on it. But when I get the main screen and click start it goes straight to a new game. Then I played it for a while and it never gave me the option to save or look at items. When can I save? Why is it messing up?

    Normally when a save becomes corrupt it will attempt to use a prior save to recover. Keep going and see what it does. Or you can try another DS.
