Why don't grocery stores and convenient stores sell hard liquor?

I mean drinks like rum, vodka, gin, etc. They only seem to sell drinks with 10% or less alcohol in it. Why is that?

Update:

I live in Georgia

Update 2:

To Rachle P I'll stick with alcohol thank-you

It depends on local laws. What you are looking for is Title Code 3 of the Georgia Code.

Basically there are different classifications of alcohol. Anything below 21% ABV is one malt and wine beverages, and above 21% ABV is distilled. It requires a separate license to sell them, and according to license can only be sold in specific stores.

Here are the laws if you want to look them up

It all depends on your State's involvement in liquor, beer and wine sales. Some States have their fingers in pretty deep. Here in Ca, you can go into a 7-11 and get any kind of alcohol you want anytime after 6 AM and before 2 AM 365 days a year, not to mention any grocery store or the corner liquor store.

In Illinois many grocery stores do sell it, but I remember that they had weird restrictions on alcohol sales in Ohio. Any state that has a lot of conservatives or fundamentalist Christians will usually have draconian laws concerning alcohol sales because the lawmakers want to appease the loonies.

Grocery stores do sell hard liquor, but it is usually under lock and key so that people cannot steel it. You have to ask the manager or cashier where it is and they will show you. :-)

Not so in Illinois about all of them sell what ever you want. I think it should be banned off of tv just like cigs.

I don't know where you are. Oklahoma maybe? You need to move to Michigan.
