Why do so many words and phrases make use of 'Jack'?

Jack-o-lantern

Jackhammer

Jack of all trades

Jackass

phone jack

The list goes on...

    For some items, "jack" is a shortening of "junction" - like "phone jack".

    For others, "Jack" is a VERY old nickname for the devil.

    Jack is not only a version of the very common name John, but as a common noun it represents many things that are involved in "lifting," including a flag.
