My boyfriend wants dreadlocks?

He is so dead-set on getting them because he loves how they look and what they express. It really upsets him that no one else is on his side about his decision on this, but I have good reasons not to be:

1. he is 19 years old.

2. he doesn't have a job.

3. he still lives with his mom.

He has been trying to get a job, just not hard enough...clearly--since he doesn't have one. And I can't seem to make him understand that no one would take him seriously if he got dreadlocks, and that it'd be sooo much harder to get a job because of them.

So, FOR HIS OWN GOOD, how can I get it through to him that this is not the best decision for right now, or his future??

Update:

@Edward D: yeah, a huge part of interviews is confidence, but a lot of companies/businesses would prefer their employees to have a more professional look about them. dreadlocks, to me, do not look professional.

If you've already told him that you don't support his descision, then I suggest giving him the reasons why. I'm totally on board with you saying that it's for his own good and that he doesn't get them at this moment. However, I don't see anything wrong with getting them in the future. Dreads look pretty cool to me.

Get off his back. Dreadlocks are awesome. You're only young once and believe me if you stand in the way of something he really wants then he will only resent you for it.

As you said - he's only 19 - why not let him do what he wants with his youth while he still has it rather than expect him to immediately become another cog-in-the-wheel worker bee. It is possible to get a job with dreadlocks. I did.

    You have three choices:

    1) Support your bf in chasing his dreams

    2) Nag him into being what you want him to be

    3) Break up with him

I could better answer your question if I knew your racial background...honestly and trufully...

I am african american and mother has LOCKS (not supposed to call them dreads) anyways, many people love her hair. She keeps them neat, clean and most importantly presentable. She graduated from SCAD with a masters in Interior Design and has yet to have a problem landing a job!

If he looks presentable, has what it takes and the skills that match the position he's applying for, there shouldn't be any concerns...as long as he doesn't dye his hair any weird colors. Luckily, I'm assuming he doesn't have a degree yet...so not many worries at all. :-)

A huge part of job interviews is confidence - and if he is confident with dreadlocks, more power to him. And tons of people in their twenties live with their parents, this is a really bad time financially.

  • He is showing by his choices... he doesn't WANT a job!

I like dreads too, but it needs to be on a singer or an activist or something.

No one will hire a guy with a radical hair style.

I think any type of job a 19 yo can get wont be concerned about how his hair looks.

having dreads will definitely not help him get a job (unless he gets a job as a labourer or something)

getting him a job working for a tradesman might be a way for him to get a job and get dreadlocks, I know heaps of tradies/labourers who have them

Perhaps he doesn't care if he has a job. If you don't support his decisions and priorities, perhaps you should break up with him.
