How much should I pay for a english bull mix mastiff puppy?
I am wanting to get a puppy to grow up with my children and my husband and I really like the mastiffs and have found one that is half English Mastiff and half Bull Mastiff but have no idea how much we should pay or if what they are charging is legitamit...?
I have 3 boys (kids) ; ages 12, 5, and 4... They are asking $300 for males and $400 for females (will consider offers)
We have done lots of research on mastiffs... http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/mastiff.htm and live in the country so we aren't worried about neighbors. But I do appreciate the concern and knowledge on medical history of these "gentle giants". ;-)

Mixed breeds should not be sold for profit -- and ALL back yard breeders should be avoided...especially a mix of this type, my guarantee is that you will have health and joint issues.
If you don't have specific requirements or desires for breed, and are only looking for a family companion to grow with the kids, there are several good dogs in need of forever homes in rescues and SPCA's everywhere, and often they have puppies.

Aside from the cross-breeding issue, in which no reputable breeder would do that, are you aware of the size and strength of these dogs?
THis is NOT a good "family dog" choice. SImply put, you are considering paying for a dog that has a big likelihood of dragging someone down the street, pushing down other peoples' children, and worse if it is not a nice dog.
Temperament is a trait that can be bred for - and by combining two breeds, that person does not know what the product will be like. Genes that have been homogenized for generations by reputable breeders of one breed do funny thngs when they are combined with those of another - dimply put, dogs aren't just dogs. There are a lot of recessive genes that everyone else try and keep suppressed - and they often pop out when two breeds are combined. That not only goes for temperaments, but all sorts of malformations of bone and other body parts - and those dogs will almost surely have terrible arthritis and joint problems.
It always amazes me how easily people are convinced that two breeds combined will be the "best of both" - they often carry with them time bombs of physical problems, as well as strange temperaments that don't turn up until the dog has reached its age of maturity, and by then it's too late, and often a child is involved.
Please go to a reputable member of the Mastiff CLub, and speak to them - they may even have a young dog for which they are looking for a home. But paying for someone's idea of potluck is a bad thing waiting to happen - and by doing so you are enabling them to do it, and giving them a reason to make more dogs that will end up in the pound for sure.

My purebred Bullmastiff from a responsible breeder was $900. For any mix breed, you should only pay $0-$100. And then it should come with it's first set of shots.
What are they asking for the puppies? How old are your children?
EDIT: The sheer size of the two breeds makes them not ideal choices for smaller children. They can be knocked over easily on accident. At 4 and 5 your littlest ones are on the cusp of being too small.
I have a 9 and a 7 year old when I got my dog as a pup. As I was done having children I thought they were old enough....low and behold, little girl #3 came along. While I might have not gotten him had I known I was going to have another, I dont regret it.
They are asking a bit much for them IMO. They are mixes. They aren't worth as much as a purebred. I'd say they should be asking at least 1/2 as much.

Not much. People shouldn't charge anything for a mixed breed puppy, but some people will charge a little just to make sure that the dog won't be sold to a laboratory or for boa constrictor food or something. I'd say no more than $50 - $100, depending on your location.

SHOULD pay nothing - unless you are adopting from a shelter or rescue, in which case anywhere from $50-$300 or so is a decent price.
A reputably (responsibly) bred dog will cost upwards $900. And you will not find a responsible breeder of mixes. Responsible breeders breed dogs that are work or show proven, genetic tested, etc etc.

Mutts should be no more than what the local shelter is asking. My mutt cost me $25.00, so that is a rather good price.
