Creative ways to write?

I usually write in 1st person and past tense, I'd like to stick to that but I'd like to write differently for example diary-style or in the form of letters to someone like in 'the perks of being a wallflower', except not those because they've already been done, can anyone think of any others ways besides these to make a regular contemporary YA novel a- bit more interesting. Feel free to change the tense and such.

All suggestions welcome

Update:

how do you write like a russian doll? haven't read wuthering heights

Update 2:

i wouldn't really say i'm restricting myself to 'rules' i just want a different way to structure my story, it's plotted, it just isn't flowing well, I'd like to try something new from how I usually write

Hey, thanks for the help on mine :)

Maybe like, all in texts/tweets/blogs/e-mails etc.?

Or like, completely in just actions. Like:

Justin Bieber invading my eardrums. Gross. Force my eyes open, 6:16 A.M. Oh lord! Who invented the sun, and provoked it so shine so early in the God damn morning? Roll over, shut my eyes. Little fingers and toes suddenly grazing my body in a frenzy. Ow! Foot in my kidney. Squint one eye open. It's Brittnay, my little sister. Well, looks like I'm up...

I personally don't know what that style is called or if it's even an acutal style, but I love it!

    Hope I helped (:

You could write as if through a social networking site. I've seen other things like emails and letters and switching the character before, but I've never seen that.

You could do it like through facebook. With that you could include convosations on facebook chat and emails and status updates that the character finds out things from that affect the story.

Something could have happened to the character like a relative dying or something, and they are writing letters to the person about how their life is as if they are still there. However, you could only reveal who the person is writing to at the end, to add tension or something.

There's just a couple of ideas, I hope I helped!

Do not restrict yourself to one specific style that will only restrict your writing when you are a novice. Do not be scared to write down whatever comes sporadically. All these "rules" can be applied in the editing stage. Since you do not want to restrict with past tense only, you can play with it a bit shifting the narrative from flash back/forward technique. The 'stream of consciousness' technique will also lend a great dimension to a first person narrative where the narrator sort of records his/her train of thoughts "as is" along with whatever happens with the external world.

  • Have you read any of Ellen Hopkins's books? That style is very uncommon but can be done very well (with lots of practice).

It's written in the form of poetry (but it doesn't rhyme).

You could try writing the story entirely in the character's head, no dialogue or anything... (Be careful with this one...it could get boring...)

Hmm...you could switch point of views...

    =3

Two people's point of view, switch off every chapter

    In IM/ chat-room messages...

    In E-mails

I am currently trying to make a short story written entirely in text messages, if that helps you.
