What is the best engineering field for a college student to major in with the best job prospects?
I want to be an engineer but don't know which field to go into. I love math and science so the requirements aren't a big deal for me. I simply want to know which field is considered the hottest right now and that offers the best job opportunities in the near future. I don't want to major in an area of engineering that is simply not hiring at the present time. I would love to work in an area of engineering that is practical and benefits the community immediately such as building the next iPhone or constructing a highway, creating the next medical device or something along those lines. I don't want to work in an almost theoretical field.
I heard that chemical engineering is expecting job decline in the near future but I hear it's a very valuable degree. What about biomedical or petroleum? Civil? Electrical?
Please let me know what you think is the best field to go into.

funny how college students and recent grads all seem to know the answer! None of us can predict the future. Petroleum is currently "hot", but on average over the last 30 years, its' been the worst for employment. Biomed is very new, so no one knows, and it's really "just" a specialty field (could be a specialty of chem, mech, or electrical, depending on what one is doing). Civil has typically been poor for decades - there are so many CEs that they have competed their hourly rate to as low as any field, and they still fight for scraps. Chemical is FAR from on the decline. The issue is that those making projections (mostly professors) still think most ChEs work in oil refining, and don't realize that pharmaceuticals, medical devices, consumer goods, electronics (who makes the chips??), materials, energy, etc, are ALL chem eng fields, and all are growing. I'd have to say that ChE, ME, and EE are all good. Another, a specialty of those 3, known as mechatronics or controls engineering, or instrument engineering or process integration engineering or robotics is a hot field and will continue to be. All others are more subject to ebb and flow even more. Whether you get a job has more to do with 1) do you have any experience (internships, etc), 2) your personality, 3) willingness to move/relocate and try something new. Nothing else is even in the running.

Just graduated Petroleum two weeks ago, and the offers are great! But I do know that it won't last forever, as oil gets ever more expensive to produce. Mechanical is good, because of the sheer versatility. Companies hire mechanical to do about anything, including petroleum. My advice; do what interests you, what you're the best at. If it's biology, do biomedical. If it's geology, do Petroleum. If it's chemistry, do chemical, etc. Believe me, take it slow, take the basic courses, and keep your options open. Going to a job you enjoy versus one you hate can make alot of money irrelevent. Good luck

Definately Biomedical engineering!!.Im a freshman in college, and I myself going to choose that major, but instead i went pre med. First ill tell you biomedical engineering in a nutshell, its knowing the human body and putting an engineering twist to it. For example creating the next artificial heart, or a device that can restore joints, anywhere from artificial lungs to kidneys. Biomedical engineering will be able to artificially re-create the human body in the near future. Now you ask would this bring the best job prospects? Listen to this, United States as a country is getting "old". Our country will soon reach its population capacity..this means there will be more old people than young. By the time this happens technology will be far more advance ( such as in the biomedical fields), people will be richer and everyone will want to live longer. Thats where the biomedical engineers come in to place, artficially enhancing human life. People will spend money on this field in order to attempt to live longer, gov't will subsidize this area of study, overall great field to major in! Plus it literally involves your favorite courses: math and science. Hope my advice works!

I like electrical engineering because it can be applied to anything using electricity and is necessary for most products made today. They are also needed in large manufacturing, research, and even government bodies.
All engineering has their place. I suggest you consult with the career center at the university that you want to attend. They usually have job placement percentages and average starting salary.

Biomedical!!! It's the fastest growing job in the country. Just go to grad school too if you can swing it.
