What can mormons eat?

My friend's a mormon and she says she can't eat some things. Is it because she's a Mormon?

Mormons can eat anything they like. We are encouraged to use wisdom in our eating as to not overeat but to eat in moderation. There are also some things like coffee, tea, tobacco, alcohol that we don't use. Those items,as well as illegal drugs are to be avoided.

We do have a handful of dietary restrictions.

We don't drink coffee, tea, or alcohol.

We don't use tobacco or illegal drugs.

...and that's pretty much it. Everything else is fair game as long as we don't go overboard (which should be common sense anyway). We've just been asked to avoid those few things because they're crazy bad for us, and God obviously wants us to be healthy and more open to Him.

They're advised to abstain from "hot drinks," "strong drink," tobacco (though most people don't eat it); they're advised to eat meat "sparingly," and to eat lots of grains.

Those come from the "word of wisdom," something Joseph Smith came up with about 150 years ago. In what he wrote, it specifically says it is NOT a "commandment," but "counsel." Up until about 40-50 years ago the church never "enforced" those dietary rules, but after that they changed so that if you didn't follow them, you couldn't hold a church position or get a temple recommend (which goes against the explicit instructions that it's NOT a command, but counsel).

The interpretation of "hot drinks" and "strong drink" varies quite a bit, but many mormons take "hot drinks" to mean coffee, and some figure that since coffee has caffeine, they don't drink Coke or Pepsi either (which have caffeine as well, though they're not "hot"). "Strong drink" is usually taken to mean alcohol, but since the word of wisdom itself says it's fine to drink wine and beer, and the church rules won't allow you to drink wine or beer, they contradict themselves there as well.

    Peace.

Only things that are off limits for Mormons are the following:

    Alcohol

    Coffee

    Tea

    Tobacco products

Some people have rules that they use individually like no caffeine, etc., but that's not the norm. Also, just so you know she probably can't watch rated-R movies, either.

We are taught to eat what is healthy for us to be able to work at the best of our physical abilities. Thus, we don't use alcohol, tobacco, caffeinated drinks, or any other harmful substance. We believe in fruits and vegetables in the season thereof. We believe in grain as the substance, or staff of life. We believe in meat in moderation.

Does that mean that we all eat in a truly healthy manner? No, we don't. I eat too much fatty, processed foods. It is hard in our supermarket lifestyle to eat natural food all the time. We try.

Yes, it is. The LDS puts out a book called the Word of Wisdom, a collection of nonholy sayings that advise members to not consume meat except during times of famine, not drinking hot drinks, vegetarianism was a new buzzword, etc. Basically the WoW is the mormon compilation of plagarized thoughts on the popular health gospels swirling around during the mid 1800's to early 1900's. A supplement (no pun intended) to what was once novel, if you will. This was when mormonism was defining itself.

Alcohol, tobacco, no smoking, no coffee, no tea. That's about it. Some choose not to drink caffeinated beverages but that's not a tenant of our faith.

    NO drinking, smoking, or drugs.

Anything else is pretty much based on your own personal conviction of how healthy you want to be.
