With some, it's gathering a full compliment of experiences; as if they are going to present their achievements at the pearly gates, 'look what I did!' in order to get a gold star.
With others, it's showing how much of their time and energy they can spend on helping others; the good samaritan. It tests their unselfishness.
And still others just want to enjoy whatever comes their way; 'if you aren't having fun, you aren't living' sort of people. It depends. But I think most people value that which makes their lives enjoyable; family, friends, work, kids, etc....it doesn't matter IMHO.

lol to the misanthropist... i find it hard to value things seeing as i don't think we have any control over anything (i.e. so you can't value freedom, and i don't value family because mine is pretty sad)
so different people value life because
(i'm going to give you some neutral answers unrelated to myself): family, culture, freedom (of speech, of religion, of sexuality), money, having opportunities, having choice having an education
