If given the choice between iPhone or iPod Touch for your child which would you choose?

My kids both share an iPod touch that we got for free when we bought our laptop this year. They have taken care of it very well but they both love playing with it. Well, recently we have talked about buying another iPod touch so they both will have their own but at the same time my son has been asking for a phone. Now truthfully my son is only 7 (almost 8) BUT he is going to start going to the Boys and Girls Club a few days a week and wanting to start going to friends houses. So we have thought about buying a kid friendly phone so that we don't have to worry about can he go to this friends house or not (he had a friend last year he never could visit because they had no home phone, which we dont either, but their cell phone was almost always turned off or not enough minutes for him to call home so we would like to avoid issues like this).

Well, after thinking the other day I thought about just buying an iPhone 3G(S) for him because 1) they are older phones so I can get it cheaper than an iPod Touch and 2) if I'm thinking of buying a cell phone anyways it would save money in the end. Should we just do the iPhone or buy a cheap phone and do the iPod touch?

Update:

Thanks for all the answers so far. Just wanted to point out that 1) we don't have a home phone cause its useless to pay $50 a month for one when we have cell phones and I only know 2 people with one and those are elder family members. 2) the kids have 1 ipod touch for about 6 months they have taken care of it so I trust them with another one and they use that because they play games on it (which only me or my husband can add) they already have cheap kid mp3 players they use the touch for games and videos mostly. and 3) its cheaper to add a phone onto my account then do a brand new line or pay as you go because its only $10 a month to add an extra line and $25 a month to add on a iphone line. And no he doesn't need one but I dont want him to rely on having to use someone else's phone just to get ahold of me for any reason especially at friends houses so either way he will be getting a phone so that he has direct contact with me or my husband when we are not with him!

Update 2:

flusterated: thanks for that tidbit about it probably getting swiped at the B&G club.

Get him the iPod touch and a cheap pay-as-you-go phone...the phone won't last long at the B&G club before someone swipes it. Seriously.

EDIT: @Jellyfish.... more & more people are cancelling their landline phones & using cell phones only - welcome to the 21st century!

By buying your 7 year old son a iphone, you are spoling him rotten. He is only 7, he is going to lose it. Or someone is going to beat up for it. You are setting your self up for failure as a parents by buying your 7 year old son a iphone. By the time he is 16, he will want you to buy him a brand new Ford Mustang. You have already started spoiling him by letting him play with a ipod touch. A 7 year old doesn't need a ipod touch. A 7 year old doesn't need a phone in general. He will not know the meaning of having a cell phone.

Also with iphone you have to have a data plan, which is going to cost you $30 extra every month. To add a extra line is $25, plus $30 data plan which comes out to $55 a month. That in my opinion is spoiling your kid rotten. A 7 year old doesn't need a phone but if you must get him one, I would get him a cheap pay as you go phone. $25 a month every 3 months. It's your choice but you are spoiling your kids rotten, know that. Don't be surprised when he is 16 and asks you a brand new out of the factory Ford Mustang or BMW.

I'd let them share the iPod they have and get a cheap pay as you go deal 4 now. U might trust your son but things can easily get broken through accidents or if he let's another kid have a go. Also I'd think about the type of area u r in giving a kid that young an expensive phone. If u live somewhere like I do he'd get mugged, 7 or not.

Pardon me - neither you nor your son's friend's parents have an actual home phone? Doesn't everyone have a home phone? They are cheap, easy to find in an emergency (like when you have to call 911 for paramedics or firemen), and never need charging.

I don't think a 7 or 8 year old needs a cell phone. Nobody needs a fancy phone either. If you get him one and let him take it to school, he won't pay attention to his lessons, he certainly won't learn the vagaries of grammar when he's texting 24/7 or playing games. Don't let the fact that his friend's parents are cheapskates influence you. If they can afford a cellphone, but not both, they should have a home phone.

IPod Touch. No child has a real NEED for a cell phone. My husband & I looked into getting IPhones & the lowest plan for us was still $80 a month. Not worth it.

Why in the world would a 7yr old need a phone? At age 7 - 15 kids need to be in adult supervision most of the time. If your son is goin to boy & girls club will their not be adults who have a phone?

These are not toys. A child of 7 or almost 8 do not need an iPod touch. Do you know easily it could be lost or stolen or broken?

My husband got us iPod touches for Christmas. Ofcoures my 14yr old wanted one too but we feel she needs to wait till she is 15. Then my husband won an iPod touch 2nd gen. from a radio station contest. So it is something the kids share. it doesn't go out of the house plus it has parental controls so they can't download stuff. So the 3 kids share it & take turns. They are 14, 11 & 9. My youngest two just play games on it. My 14yr old likes listening to music on it and other things.

Neither!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jesus Christ, a phone at 7 years old!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! And of course the little dear is going to look after it perfectly, it's not going to get dropped/broken/accidentally sat on/swiped from his bag at school.

I did not get a phone until I was old enough to have a job to pay for it. Nor did I get an MP3 player of any kind until I was nineteen. I see no reason for kids to have these things. I see no NEED for kids to have these things. And I don't care what you say about your son being at someone's house. If he's not in a situation where there is a responsible adult who can provide a phone for him to call with, then that's an editement on your parenting skills.

Buy them a $20 MP3 player and if they don't lose that within 2 years then they can consider an ipod touch. My 7 year old loses her cheap mp3 almost daily there is no way I'd give her a $400 item. As well, if my kids friend didn't have a home phone I wouldn't allow them there either, becuase they are irrsponsible parents and I wouldn't trust them to watch my kid. If he needs a cell phone get a cheap pay as you go one that you won't be pissed about if he loses it.

iPod touch for sure. A kid that young does not need a cell phone, and if he does because of the traveling, a cheap tracfone will do just fine.

i'd buy the ipod touch and then get a cheap phone for general use, if your child is taking this phone to a club then he might be careful at home with these things but there are other children there who might be careless.
