Trouble with external hard drive on my Mac?

I got a My Book Elite 1TB external hard drive for Christmas, which I intend to use with my Macbook Pro (running OS X Snow Leopard). When I first connected it everything seemed to be going fine, but I have few questions.

First, I decided to use the hard drive as my storage device for Time Machine backups. However when I did this, it renamed the device "Time Machine Backups", and it seems like it's going to keep backing up until my entire drive is full... I wanted to also store some files on the harddrive. Is there a way that I can designate a set amount of space that Time Machine can use for backups and still keep the majority of it for files? Secondly, how do I move files onto the hard drive? Seems like a dumb question but I can't really figure it out.

I'd really like to get the most out of this nice new gift, and any help would be much appreciated.

Update:

Also, is it possible to change the name of the drive? Not a huge deal but I'd just like to know.

You should erase and partition the hard drive into two volumes – one exclusively for Time Machine, and one for your own use.

    1. Plug in the hard drive, deactivate Time Machine.

    2. Open Disk Utility (from the Utilities folder within the Applications folder), select the hard drive from the left-hand list and click on the 'Partition' button. You will see a diagram of the hard drive partitions and be given options to set each volume's size, name, and format. Leave 'Mac OS Extended Journaled' as format.

    3. When done, change settings in Time Machine to the new volume.

In System Preferences, click Time Machine. You can turn it on or off and pick what you want to back up on, but I dont think you can set a designate how much space is used. I'm pretty sure you can add once you select a back up device.

As for adding files to the EHD, literally click and drag. You can Apple(swirly button)-click or shift-click to select miltible items.

It feels like the difficult tension has taken its final spin :( If it at once stopped working, i could blame application. however the style you describe no longer being waiting to get entry to archives, probably intermittently no longer being waiting to jot down over archives "get entry to denied", many times alerts that its corrupted/malfunctioning. you could recuperate the information in case you're taking it to a save.
