How soon will the baby come?
My wife is 37 weeks pregnant, dialated 4.5cm and over 85% effaced. She just had a membrane sweep done yesterday and told us the baby should come within the next 48-72 hours. It's already been 24 and my wife feels no changes. Is it really safe to say the baby will come within the next two days, or should I be prepared to wait longer?

You can't ever be completely certain when a baby will come. I was told I would have my 3rd much earlier than my sons and she would be here with a quick and easy labor. That was bull my son's were both born at 37 and 37 1/2 weeks and the labors lasted 18 and 16 hrs. With my 3rd I was over 39 weeks pregnant and had a very hard 24 hr and 38 min labor. Dr. 's can estimate , but they don't know any more than you do exactly when a baby will come
All I can say is be prepared...it's going to happen sooner or later.

She is only 37 weeks. A membrane sweep can help labor get started IF the body is ready, but its still early. You can walk around at 4.5 cm dilated for weeks and not go into labor... she could get a sweep done at every appointment for the next 4 weeks and still end up induced at 42 weeks.
Until she has steady contractions or her water breaks I would go on with your life as usual. The baby could come tonight or the baby could come January 20th.

I've had friends to have their membranes sweeped up to 3 times and it never worked and they had to be induced with Pitocin in the end.
Was there a reason for the membrane sweeping? If there is no medical reason then why not let the baby come when it is ready?

Hmm. Sometimes the sweep isn't effective and they put the gel on. I would say that if it she doesn't start feeling anything in the next 24 - that the sweep wasn't effective.
Sorry, it's so hard to get a straight answer for anything like this.

Prepare to wait - it could be a matter of hours days or another 4 weeks still but it sounds like the sweep didn't work
