How to Close furnace vent in rooms?

I have some heater vents from the furnace in rooms that I would like to close off. Its an older style home with no basement so the furnace is in the dining room and it gets really warm. I want to close the vents to an 2nd floor bedroom because the heat rises and its the warmest and hard to sleep without fans on.

My wife can simply turn the vent to close but it doesn't work. She wants to tape the outside of the vent but that would look ugly. Can I remove the vent from the wall and put something there at the opening and then replace the vent? I checked the pipes and it doesn't have the vents shut off levers.

ANy help would be great. These are normal heating vents on the lower walls.

I would not permanently close it off, you may want to use it in the future. I suggest you take the vent cover off and double up some aluminum foil, place it over the opening and put the vent cover back on. the aluminum foil is flexible enough to mold it self to your desired shape. It will also be easy to puncture it to put the screws back in. You can oversize the foil and trim the edges around the vent.

You can buy panels of magnetized soft plastic for that purpose at home centers....just cut it to fit over the register/vent and stick it in place...remove when needed.

Or you can remove the vent grille, cover the inside with heavy paper and reinstall it.

One idea is to cut a narrow slot in both sides of the runs you want to close off and insert a piece of sheet metal and seal it with aluminum tape. Slide the piece out as far as needed or in all the way to block that run.

no reason for ir merely the way it replace into designed, you need to use duct tape on it and it would be superb, and as some distance because of the fact the remainder of your homestead you could regulate the remainder of your vents to heat rooms greater or much less based how lots they're used

I don't know why you couldn't remove them, as you say, an stuff some insulation in there, then put them back. If it's an older style house, you might need some touch up paint around the edges, but sounds good to me.
