No such thing as soap at the store?

Someone told me that most soaps at almost any store are just detergent bars and rough on your skin, not actually soap. They said the FDA regulates how companies label their product, and if it isn't actually soap, then legally the company can't advertise the word soap on their item.

I went to the store, and sure enough I didn't see any that actually said soap, they said beauty bar, body and face wash, body scrub, cleanser, body bar..... Nothing said soap. Not ivory, not dove, not even burt's bees.

I've found a local shop in town that sells a product that says soap on it, but it's $5 a bar. The lady that sells them says they're wonderful on her skin, but because it's real soap and not a detergent bar, it has lye in it.

Are all these things true? I'm kinda freaked out either way.

I've always thought products were labeled to specify what they were exactly and what they were used for. I thought the word "soap" itself was way to vague and could refer to almost anything of some sort of substance you would use to clean areas of your body with. Now, I'm having doubts. I think you're right.. I think there is something companies are hiding and don't want us to know about. I'm going to do some research on this and probably get back to you.

    Take a gander at this:

"Most body cleansers on the market today are actually synthetic detergent products and come under the jurisdiction of FDA. These detergent cleansers are popular because they make suds easily in water and don't form gummy deposits. Some of these detergent products are actually marketed as "soap" but are not true soap in the common and legal definition of the word."

    Yes, it is true. ^

Well. I don't know what lye is.
