can i use baking soda in a humidifier?

what i am really trying to find out is if it will prolong the life of the filter i am using. it is fairly new, but i would like to know? .

Update:

my main question is how to keep it clean while its still fairly new and in use. sorry.

    vinegar is the more common cleaner.

    Well I'm not sure what you are asking.

    Are you wanting baking soda to 'clean' it? If so, you want to rinse it with vinegar to help keep hard water buildup from happening.

    If you are wanting to use baking soda to cheap out on trading out the filter, don't do that. It will mung up everything. Just change the filter. Those filters carry bacteria on them in time and will contaminate the air. You want to change out to a clean sterile filter when the time comes.

    I know that WALMART sells ARMAND HAMMER filters to use in your home. They are the manufacturer of Baking Soda...so that might work. You can buy desiccant containers at the hardware store or even the dollar store sometimes that will absorb moisture from the air. Good Luck with your search!
