Cycles; Any experience out there please with Rohloff 14 speed hub gears?
Roberts Cycles in Croydon (S London) offer these (for wide enough frames) so much neater than derailleurs and can't be the much heavier than all the normal cogs etc. Wondered about reliability, longevity, ease of use and so on.

They are expensive, and somewhat heavier than a derailleur system, but the quality is superb and the engineering is really something. They have a much wider gear range than any other internal gear hub, and the gears are spaced an equal distance apart. They are pretty much bulletproof as long as the gear oil is changed as recommended by the manufacturer. They are only available with a twist shifter, which makes it difficult to use drop bars. An advantage to these hubs is that you can build a rear wheel with no dishing, making your wheel much stronger

They are excellent hubs and will last a while. They are only a bit heavier then normal hubs. They only thing that would make me not want one is they use twist shifters and not the STI or Ergo-power shifters. But if you aren't bothered by the twist shifters then they are an excellent alternative to conventionall cassette hubs.

According to a review that I read in a cycling magazine some time ago , there has never been a failure of one of these hubs.
