What format should I save HD movies on to be able to play via PS3 on an external HDD.?

I have just purchased an HD camcorder and not wanting to go to the expense of buying a blu-ray writer to keep my masterpieces on, I opted to buy a large external HDD which is compatible with both my PC and the PS3 which I have done. Can you please advise me what format I should save my movies on to enable them to play via the PS3.
