the most powerful android devices out right now are the droid x, the droid 2, and all the galaxy s devices (at&t's captivate, verizon's fascinate, t-mobile's vibrant, and sprint's epic). they all have at least a 1 ghz cpu, and a power VR graphics chip, allowing for the most powerful 3D rendering and speed in any application. the newest of the galaxy s devices, the Nexus S, has all these features too, however, its bland 2.3 gingerbread experience has left some disatisfied.

however, many htc android devices are easy to use, and are generally well suited to most average users.

also, the blackberry torch, with at&t, is decently powerful for a bb device.

keep ur eyes pealed for the new windows phone 7 devices too. they have a lot of future potentual!

NOTE: all devices mentioned above have capacitive touch screens, and can support multi touch, wi-fi, and pinch to zoom.

First, this will depend on perception of what you need. Some people will yell and scream at you that the iPhone is the absolutely best thing in the world, and of course you can't convince them otherwise. Also, you would have to consider the carrier. If you buy the Storm (9530) in the US, you would be tied to Verizon. If you buy the 9500, it will work on AT&T, and T-Mobile, but on T-Mobile, it will stay at EDGE. The Google Nexus 2 is a T-Mobile only phone, while the iPhone is only on AT&T.

Now, if you have crappy T-Mobile service, the Nexus is probably not the choice, whereas if you have only Verizon in your area - the Storm is the only phone you as an option. Now, provided that all things are equal, here are some things to consider.

Storm does not use a capacitive screen. At this time, only the RIM 9800 has that (AT&T only for now). You may find it frustrating if you are used to the such screens. However, RIM seems to have been more popular in the business environment. And I used to have a RIM, and have yet to find a decent Call Manager for my Android.

Nexus 2 has a 16GB capacity and no expansion. It supports wifi-N, and has NFC (not yet popular in the US). It has a front facing camera if that is important to you, and a reasonable 5MP rear camera. It has Android 2.3 (latest version), and is expected to get automatic updates from Google. It also has Google Voice which I personally find valuable.

iPhone comes in 16GB, and 32GB version. Like the N2, no expansion. It has wifi-N, but no NFC. It has good cameras on both sides, and iOS is always updated through the iTunes store. Google Voice is available, but it can not be set as the default dialer. This will mean you will have to use GV if you want a GV number to show.

N2 is only available on T-Mobile, but you can get it unlocked. However, it only supports one of AT&Ts bands, so if you unlock - don't expect 3G with AT&T everywhere. You can not unlock the iPhone without rooting (jailbreaking), and therefore VOIDing the warranty.

iPhone has a better screen, more games, and media integration is better. The downside, if you are using a PC, expect to have install a 125MB+ media player. Yes, I mean media player. With Windows Media Player about 25MB, this is ridiculous. However, this is required with easy integration with iPhone. In addition, iPhone 4 uses a microSIM which is the only phone that does this. If something happened to your iPhone, you can't simply swap the SIM card to another phone until you get iPhone replaced.

N2 has better Google Integration. Where Apple charges you for OTA syncing on your iPhone with Mobile Me, Google does it for free (with exception of storage). Google Maps are better than the iPhone version especially if you rely on public transit, and Google supports your service. You can use Windows Media Player for transferring music.

Both the iPhone, and N2 has a 1Ghz CPU, and a good sized screen. So, as for those two, your option is pretty much what carrier you want. T-Mobile (N2) is smaller, but have better prices (especially if you pay out the MSRP). T-Mobile also offer payment plans on qualifying customers. AT&T is the bigger of the two, but more expensive.

As for phones I would recommend, again - it would depend on what you would want to do. I would recommend a fast CPU (at least 1Ghz). I would prefer expandable capacity, but not required if you have at 16GB (for now). Front facing camera should be something to look into, and make sure your phone has a 3.5mm jack. I will also want something with a 4 - 5 inch screen. Smaller screens are harder to type on, and larger screens will become more cumbersome.
