How to quit a job after 1 week?

I Just got a job for a shoe store and I already hate it so much. i'm a student on break (high school) and they schedules me forty hours this week 8 hours a day.

I can't stand it. I'm the only sales associate and they're are 4 managers/assistant managers. it's horrible. I'm the only one who has to take out the trash, clean the bathrooms, and stock.

The managers are very snippy and cross with me. There's a very strict dress code and they;re all in there thirties while I'm only 16. Only 5 people work there.

I want to quit. I'm working tomorrow and I don't know how to go about it because the main manager won't be there. My mom is pressuring me to work anyway but I'm so miserable there.

Update:

I appreciate the fact that I got a chance tow ork here but I'm just not happy and It's not for me.

Well, I would call in sick tomorrow and then call the manager and say, "It just isn't working out.". There is no reason to work there tomorrow if you're quitting anyway.

If the manager presses you, you can just say, "The physical demands were more than I expected, adn I am afraid it's going to affect my schoolwork, plus the strain on my family life just makes it unworkable".

He may try to talk you into it, but stick to your guns. Also, try to keep the conversation short.

You're right to quit if you hate it. That's the blessing of being young - you can try on lots of different jobs.

EDITED TO ADD: One job that doesn't work out will not hurt your references that much at your young age. It is EASY to explain that a job didn't work out. You cannot easily expalin getting fired for stealing or something, but saying "I underestimated the physical demands of the job" is quite acceptable.

After reading all the other comments I would like to point out the fact that she is still only 16. Stating that she should get used to the real world means nothing because there is plenty of time for that. Your 16 and the real world is all around you. Have fun. I understand there is no better time to learn what reality will be, but don't just chalk your day to day experiences up to a dull work life. You will have 50+ years of that. Working is fine when your 16, but moderation is certainly a key. You should either talk to your manager and explain the your simply working too much and would like part time hours if they are available, or if thats not possible place your resignation. Your teen years are a great time to learn about life and become mature, but don't forget to have fun while doing it. Life really doesnt have to be boring if you don't let it. Work, but dont work too much. Besides, you will have school to focus on soon, which is more important by a long shot.

I am so sorry that you had a terrible week, but hang in there. I started working at a Grocery Store about two years ago in Carts. On my first day I rammed into a car with the Cart machine- I am telling you this so that you know that you are not the only one with a terrible start. Anyway, I wanted to leave but I decided to hang in there and I did and I am so happy that I did.

Try another week; however if you are being disrespected and under appreciated then do what you have too do. But here are some things/tips which I used on myself when I was considering leaving- Think of your paycheck, if you put up with this job you will have spare (I am assuming spare because you are a high school student) money to buy luxury items like clothes, electronics, and possibly Starbucks. Plus time will help, the longer you stay the more the managers will ease up too you, and the more you will get used to the routine.

I wish you the best of luck, but get used to working; this is life. Unfortunately we must work to pay for our bills, housing, cars, and college. Again, the best of Luck.

Welcome to the world of working and being the 'newbie'.

You really need to look at this job another way.....look at all of the experience you will gain...experience which will help you in the future.....

Remember, you are there to work....NOT find fault in others. Just think of the tasks as chores but you are getting paid to do it......:)

You are scheduled the 40 hours because you are on break; once you return to school, you will only get part time hours. Welcome to the world of work; it is full of dress codes and unhappy customers. It really doesn't matter where it is; it is mostly the same all over. I suggest that you get another job before you quit this one...it is easier to get a job when you already have a job. This about this: who will want to hire you because you can't get along with just 5 other people? Hope this helps.

  • Hey, work sucks--it's one of the core adversities in life. Maybe you'll find a job you like, but until then you need the money. You may have no immediate need for money, but that's because you're 16. You'll have plenty of need for money soon enough. And jobs are hard to come by, feel fortunate you have one at all.

It will go on your record and your next potential employer will see that you are a quitter and so decide to hire someone else instead of you

    just wait, dear, when you're in your 30s and have to work at a job to pay the bills;

get used to a miserable job now, so you'll be prepared for it later.
