Why do the old shelby cobra's look different from other mustangs of that era(1960's)?

The Shelby Cobra is a totally different car than the Mustang the Shelby Cobra was introducued in 1961 where as the Mustang was introduced in 64 1/2 aka 65. The Cobra name wasn't used on a Mustang as a version untill 1976 when it was used on the mustang with the performance v6
