self defence in UK Law use of weapons?
I am under the impression that any item carried for the purpose of causing injury is classed as offensive. If a Kubotan (short metal, plastic or wood stick about 8 - 9 inch in length) on a key ring is carried for the sole purpose of making the location of you keys easier, and that is the only reason you carry it, is this still an offensive weapon? and can your own knowledge have an impact on the classification of an item as an offensive weapon, eg through my training I know how to use a comb as an effective knife, dose that make a comb an offensive weapon in my hands?
Sorry there was a mistake in the published size of the Kubotan Key chain (although I suspect the out come of its weapon relevance will not alter) it should read 4 to 5 inches.

an 8 to 9 inch long keyring is not acceptable and you would very probably be charged with carrying an offensive weapon in this country and i don't think you could successfully argue it's a keyring
if you use a comb to kill someone and it comes out that you are trained in martial arts there are possiblities you could be charged if you were found to be the aggressor rather than defending yourself and even then we have the law around 'reasonable force' which is very woolly
best to have a keyring that makes a noise when you clap or whistle rather than risk being convicted of carrying an offensive weapon and having a record

This is a very tricky question, but one where i'm sure police use discretion on. For example, you can carry a cricket or baseball bat around, but if stopped by the police, you would have to satisfy them that you have just been or are going to, play cricket or baseball.
The keyring might be a bit hard to explain - you say it is 8-9 inches long. That's a very big thing to hang from a keyring and I cant see how one would justify having it as a keyring, when something else non 'weapony' would suffice just as well!!!
According to the law, anything made to cause harm or adapted to do so is classed as an offensive weapon.
The site below is quite informative x
