Because the first thing to mark the end of the universe wouldn't be the sudden and rather rapid deceleration of the universe and it's subsequent collapse in on itself, nor every star going supernova, it'd be a flock of birds dying together in some random part of some random planet within said universe. No, I think it's a sign of human egotism to think every natural tragedy in some way revolves around us. I also think it's a sign of human stupidity that we can't stop polluting the environment enough to stop the birds from dying in the first place.
