What is the procedure if an El Al flight has to land in a Muslim country that doesn't recognize Israel?

Suppose an El Al flight suddenly encounters engine trouble over the Indian Ocean and is too far away from India to make an emergency landing--the only options are Somalia, Yemen, or Oman. In such a scenario are personnel at the airport obligated to give any assistance? Do you think in the case of Somalia or Yemen, the government would try to hold the Israeli passengers as hostages?

Let's look back in history to see what happened in similar situations. In 1950 many Israeli planes landed in Yemen with full cooperation from the Yemeni Imam then to transfer 49,000 Yemeni Jews to Israel. If this happens today in Somalia, likely the plane will be protected by the Somali government. Likely this will be the case no matter which Arab country it lands in. However, if it lands in Somali pirates controlled areas, then mostly a ransom will be asked for the plane's return.

Now what would happen if an Arab planes gets lost and flies in Israeli controlled air space. We have an example in history. Israel shot down a Libyan civilian airplane over the Sinai in 1973 killing 108 civilians on board.

I think the procedure will simply be: save face.

Not maintaining generally accepted human morality would make such a country look really bad in the eyes of the world. So they just have to.

It is one thing to battle your enemy with words, but such an act would stand equal to a declaration of war.

    Depends on :

Is this country in a state of war with Israel?

Does it carry any Army personnel?

Does it carry any military equipment?

If yes, the hosting country will send the passengers to some other country and keep the plane, the shipment and army personnel

If not in a state of war then the plane will be sent back with passengers to Israel

First, the Jews had no longer been pushed out of Israel; there grow to be an Arab circulate there, contemporaneous with Hitler and allied with him, tochronic all Jews out of the British Mandate of Palestine, because it grow to be then. yet this grow to be no longer fullyyt effectual, and Hitler lost the conflict. As for why Israel belongs to the Jews, properly, it grow to be given to Abraham and his descendants; and God reported he might bless people who bless the Jews, and curse people who curse the Jews. it fairly is a minimum of as stable a declare to the land as that of the Arab Palestinians, who declare that it belongs to them because of the fact it grow to be as quickly as ruled by employing Muslims (under the Ottoman Empire) and for this reason could consistently be ruled by employing Muslims.

according to international treaties the plane is a sovereign ground of the country it is originated from.

there was a case of an El-Al flight which had to land in one of the persian golf countries and the passengers had no problems at all.

if an arab country would violate this treaty then a war might break.

btw - El Al don't fly over hostile countries.

its actually a really good question. i dont think the general public knows the procedure if such a thing happened.

i doubt that any country that wont let an israeli even play tennis there such as dubai or malaysia would let a plane land there, and certainly countries such as iran, iraq, bangladesh, yemen, saudi etc. wouldnt either.

Only these are Muslim countries Iran, Egypt and Jordon so the situation you describe is unlikely to happen as being so close to Israel a plane in trouble could return to its original base. Here is a list of its destinations
