Why does David Letterman stop and turn his back to the audience when he makes his entrance?

He appears to be checking himself in an offstage mirror. Any ideas?

    I find him a very bad journalist.

    Been wondering that for many years. He also touches his left wrist, as if pointing to the time, but I've never noticed a watch there. In 4 years, nobody's given a serious answer to this question. Why??
