Give hope to a future medical student?

My girlfriend will be graduating this year, and she hopes to study to become a doctor. She enjoys the idea and is hardworking and capable enough to do it, and I know that. Part of the reason she is doing it, however, is because of her parents expectations. They literally expect nothing from her other than her becoming a successful doctor.

So, my question is, can you maybe give her some hopeful advice?

She constantly explains to me the oppressive number of years to study, not to mention the rigorous hours and the burdening expectations of both her teachers, patients, and parents.

Not to mention, apparently a large number of students drop out under the strain and are left feeling wasted and jobless.

She understands it's difficulty--maybe all too well, but surely there must be SOME bright side?

If its something she really wants to do, then she should stick to it. No matter what...there will be times when she may doubt that she wants to be a doctor. And of course times of hard work and long hours. It can put a restraint on relationships too you know. In the end, she needs to be strong, and realize that the career she is going into requires a lot of scarifice. There are always a lot of positives though. Doctors earn respect because of the hard work they do to get the title. People also count on them a lot, she would be making a positive change in peoples' lives, literally in a sense saving somebody's life. A lot of people are grateful to doctors, especially the good ones. She shouldn't become a doctor if her heart isnt in it though. Being a doctor is not like any other career.

Med school is a very very rigorous and stressful process. Most students make it through by focusing on their goals... becoming a doctor. It is easier to make it through such a rough process by knowing that you will be doing something that you will enjoy and will make you proud.

If SHE doesn't truly want to be a doctor and doesn't know if she will be happy and proud being one and she is only doing it for other people then she will find the process much much much more difficult. She needs to take a hard look at her life and decide who she wants to make happy: herself or everyone else. If she decides herself then she needs to decide if she truly wants to be a doctor and if she thinks that the ends justify the means. Med school is a very bad idea for anyone who doesn't really want to be there.

But, if she really does want to be a doctor then she should focus on the future. Med students do have a lot of fun when they can and she will probably become very close to her classmates and they will all help each other through the tough times.
