how many calories should I consume for weight loss?
I aim for 1200 a day (female, 26 years old, slightly overweight) but have been told I should aim for 1500 to avoid putting my body in starvation mode. I am doing quite a lot of exercise as well....walking/cycling 4 mils to work and back and then gym/swimming/karate every night

no that is fine, aim for 1200, then if you have a crafty snack you will be fine and still lose the weight.

Not all calories are the same. I'm on a program where I eat between 850 and 1000 calories a day. It has enough carbs to protect my brain, enough protein to protect my muscles, but nothing left over for energy. It took about three days for my body to shift it's energy source to my fat. Now my fat seems to melt off. I lost 35 pounds in three months. I have more energy than I've had in years and I don't have cravings anymore.
I went to www.3wayfit.tsfl.com. The program was recommended by my doctor. I save money on food as I'm eating less often and less junk. Best of all, it comes with a free health coach. It is really nice having someone I can call or email if I have a question or a temptation. Check it out.

Generally I would advise a total of no less than 1000 calories (exercise deducted from your food intake) to avoid starvation mode, and as you are doing a lot of exercise 1500 calories sounds about right. Cut your carbs as much as possible (especially rice, pasta, bread and potatoes) and make sure you get plenty of protein.
