The Apple Peeler machine...what do you think?

My grocery store just marked down some apple peeler gizmos...the ones that peel, core and slices apples and potatoes to $6! (They were originally $20!). I never had one and always did things "the old-fashioned way". I always meant to get one....and now just couldn't pass up this great deal (says it's guaranteed for 5 yrs). I also picked up 2 more for each of my daughters.

So in your opinion are they really easy to use and effective? I was thinking when giving it to them I'd make some kind of apple treat to send along with it. I've made those great apple strudels from puffpastry.com but would like an idea for something to fill an 8 inch baking dish (I'd rather do that than a pie.) Any suggestions will be much appreciated as I try out my new kitchen gadget...thanks :).

Update:

...maybe that's why I've always done it by hand...lol;

I got it for the daughters because they have kids and I was thinking about all the apple slices they eat with cinnamon on them for a snack and that it would be easy---plus kids love gadgets, I guess they have the time for them. But apple butter....now I wouldn't have thought of that! good idea!

Update 2:

Thanx Bleweyez...I love applesauce..actually..all things apple...and potato dishes! and I hate peeling those, too...so I'm hoping it'll be a breeze. I'm sure I'll need a few practice runs-- and I'll find the right spot for it...I have a granite work island, that should do.

    I used to have one and it broke,....I would pay $6. for a new one. I thought it sliced the apples a little too thin for how I really liked them in a pie. I make a lot of apple butter and it worked great for that. You might do that cook up a pint of apple butter for each of them.

    My grandson was living with me when I had mine and he was 3 to 10 years old at the time and I left mine set up all the time. He loved apples but wouldn't eat the peel and never got real close to the core. With the apple peeler, anytime he wanted an apple he just slipped it on, turned the handle and had lots of apple slices to munch on. He used it every day.

    Edited to add:

    To attach my apple peeler...I pull my built in bread board out just a couple of inches and attach it to that...works perfect. I use the same thing for attaching my old fashioned food grinder.

    I have one and only use it when I make applesauce with my boyfriend. He likes the apples peeled when making it. I personally leave the peels on when I make mine. However, they are great if you have a lot of apples to peel. The biggest problem is a place to affix the peeler for use. If you put it on the counter it could scratch up the counter. If someone could make you a stand for it, it would be wonderful. I love using it....it is easy and quick. I think it was a GREAT purchase!

    I have had two of them given to me.

    I used one of them once. I gave it away. The person I gave it to used it once and got rid of it.

    I gave the second one to Goodwill.

    It is a lot faster to peel apples by hand.
