This Pre-Calculus problem is frustrating me...?

e^x + x = 5

x = ?

I know that x = 1.60355, but I don't know the work in between. I want to know that.

Update:

natural logarithms are allowed of course. I'm fine with working with that.

    Mark,

    this is a transcendental equation which has no closed form solution.

    It is solved either graphically or numerically.

    ok, i will answer this with the aid of assuming you recommend f(g(-3)). This reads, f of g of (-3). So, start up with g(-3), and we get: g(-3) = (-3)^2 - 2*(-3) - 3 g(-3) = 9 + 6 - 3 g(-3) = 15 - 3 g(-3) = 12 Now to sub that volume into f: f(12) = 12^2 + 2*12 + 3 f(12) = one hundred forty four + 24 + 3 f(12) = 151 Now, i'd nicely be dealing with this incorrect. So if i'm, i'm sorry for dropping a at the same time as. If not, i'm satisfied to assist.
