Building credit rating?
I am a 24 year old graduate student and bio-behavioral research assistant. I currently have one credit card. I applied for a pre-approved credit card offer that I received in the mail through Discover and was denied (I had some school tuition charges on the card that I had paid off but apparently not before the time they checked my card balance). That was around the first of October, right around three months ago. I currently have 0 balance on my credit card. I'm wanting to get more credit in order to build my rating (not to use regularly and carry a balance) before I get out of college.
What is the best way to go about this? I've heard that after three months the previous credit check and denial will not have an effect on my being able to get more credit. Is this correct? What steps should I take in order to get the most credit possible to build the best credit rating I can at this point?
Thank you for your help!

Credit denials don't show on your credit report and have no impact on your score. Credit inquires age off your credit report in 2 years but have very little impact after 6 months.
You are safe to apply for another credit card. The balance on your card before may or may not have been a factor in being turned down. It really depends on the credit card debt to limit ratio. If it was more than 30%, it hurts your score. Paying off the balance would give your score an immediate boost.
You problem could simply be that you have a very limited credit history. If you only have one card, you need to use it every month and pay the balance in full to build good payment history. Having a card and not using it, does nothing to build your credit.

Just use the card you already have and pay off the balance in full each month when you get the bill. That's the best way you can build your credit history. You don't need several cards.

Not to echo too much of what's been previously said, you can also look into obtaining a secured credit card. Of course, the limit won't be as high as you would like, but the key is first get the score up..the credit limits will soon follow!

You were denied because your income is inadequate for more then 1 credit card. Just keep using the one you have. Use it monthly, charge some items and pay it in full each month. That is how you build credit. Not credit rating
